I was watching TV the other night, when a commercial for Lincoln automobiles came on. It's the one about dreams. You know..."My dream is to increase production 130%...My dream is to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Harvard...My dream is to rid the world of toe fungus"...so on and so forth.

Well while I was watching I realized that I don't have any dreams...I couldn't even think of any good candidates. Somehow that strikes me as really sad. It makes me feel inadequate, like, how can I get any better if I don't have a dream or two?

So, I'm asking...is this because of my illness? Is it because I am tired of having my dreams shattered time and time again? Will I ever have a dream again? And, if not, does anyone have a spare dream they aren't using at the moment?

Please help,
DJ Dreams???

I have a couple of dreams - but realistically I doubt they can be realised. I could offer one to you but somehow I don't know if you would want to sing opera on stage, in front of an adoring audience.

On a less snide note - you know - your post has got me thinking. I see and hear of so many who have dreams to save this and save that - to achieve this and conquer that - and this just doesn't happen to me.

Yes, I agree - it makes me feel sad. But you know? I don't think it makes me inadequate. I can only be who I am right now, right this minute, with or without dreams - and hopes, and wishes. Of course, I have many of those.

I am sorry you have had dreams shattered. That hurts!

Sorry, Sabrina, no opera for me...though playing music again would be high on my dreamlist if I had one...

And Liv, I think getting better is a pretty good dream...I guess I really do have a dream--getting better.

Maybe my problem isn't quite what I thought. Rather than not having dreams, maybe I suppress or ignore or deny them because I don't think they will ever come true! Hmmmm....

Yes, hmmmm - that is a different take - and one that I have to agree with.

Isn't it amazing that when we ask a question / questions, some of the answers are not what we expected and that our perception changes?

Would you be able to identify any supressed or ignored dreams? If you can, would you like to share them with us?

Sabrina,

That's why I asked the question...because I know others will come at things from a different perspective and shed a different light on things.

As to suppressed dreams...I guess working as a professional musician again would be a big one. Maybe not playing full time, but working in a store or something, too.

Another one would be finishing my degree. It's been almost 30 years since I left school, I would really like to finish.

And the third would be to make enough money to support myself and my family...even if I can't live with them. I don't know if this last one qualifies for a dream-it's something that I have to do at some level...

OK, maybe I do have dreams after all!

Dreams are essential, without goals there's no where to go in life besides where the ind takes you...ya know? For years I had no dreams because I didn't care where I ended up, how I got there, and I also feared that I was not worthy enough to accomplish any goal. How you gain an esteem is by accomplishing goals and becoming proud of yourself, then with the esteem your motivated to accomplish even more goals. It's like a cycle, but it has to begin somewhere. Maybe start off small, just in the beginning. Like for my friend Patty for example her ultimate goal is to go to college and to get a degree, but her first goal is to get her liscence. It's always safe to start off small and work your way up. I hope you find whatever goal it is you're seeking. What is it you always wanted in life? There's nothing to small or to grand, there's so many oppurtunities out there for people like you and I. I believe you could do whatever you wanted Davey if you started off in the right area. Good luck....I hope you seek whatever it is you're searching for.

"If you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?" From the movie, South Pacific.

Seems to me you mentioned not long ago of starting up a band or three?? You mentioned jammin' with different bands... Aren't those dreams?? They would be in MY book! You never know what can happen if you accomplish just "jammin'"! Dreams???

I also think that dreams are important... it gives meaning to life. Dreams don't have to be realistic, they can just be dreams... You're only suppose to reach them at the end of life. Well, some of them anyway. I read an article once and the guy said that some dreams aren't meant to be realized, because when we achieve them we feel empty because there's nothing left...

Buy a travel magazine and look at all the destinations and dream of a holiday with your favourite people and what you would do there... I read travel magazines to cheer me up sometimes and give my mind a holiday.

Oh dear, that’s a tough one. I used to have dreams, clung to them so tight for they were going to be my ‘salvation’. Over the years all dreams turned to dust. Dreams???
