I think the idea of using a small wading pool is an awsome idea. Putting some towels in it can give them a nice warm cozy area & when they scooch around, the edge will keep them from getting too far away from Mom.

I had a problem when I used an x-pen for keeping Celia & her puppy together. She wasn't producing milk (whole other problem) & her puppy somehow got away from her on the 2nd day & got trapped inbetween the wires. I was in the room & immediately heard his screams. That was when I realized how much Leo cares for puppies because he went running out of the room into where I usually slept thinking he was waking me up....only my husband was sleeping in there so he woke him up. I was so surprised at how paniced Leo was when the puppy got stuck. It is amazing what kind of trouble a 2 day old puppy can get into.

I haven't found a wading pool yet. Found a pup under the bed when mom had gone outside. Auntie is watching closely as is uncle who pertends he doesn't care. They are all doing very well with the entire process. We have been watching them by the hours. Some have bright red feet and ears and some have black on the pads of feet and a little dark on ears. Some have the lab nose and muzzle that looks like it could hold onto anything and others are more dainty. Mom is still eating a lot but seems she ate yesterday to make up for a week of poorish eating. She went through a pound of liver and 2 pounds of rice in 24 hours. Today I put a pound of ground lamb in with two pounds of rice. I cool it with frozen veggies if she is real hungry.

Dad dog went to a new home yesterday with a nine year old who is strong and heavy enough to not let the dog drag him. My daughter who wanted dad dog so much basically let him love her and sleep with her and spoil him and then left him. He destroyed her room the other day including a $400 digital camera of mine she had left in there. We have left the mess so if/when she returns she can see what happened to her clothes etc. He is fixed now and is a great dog for anyone willing to commit love and time. He needs a human to snuggle with. He thinks he is a lap dog. Speaking of which my three little lap dogs are now looking at the food dishes like:"wait a minute, we can't eat that!" So it's small dishes again. They are all on me as I type and my college daughter is up sleeping in my bed, half watching the babies and mom.

One of the little guys, a young neutered male poodle and shizu cross loves his noisey toys. I have birds that sing, ducks the quack, toys that speak. What makes me laugh is when the puppies squeak he gives them that same head turn and hmm, should I shake it to see where the sound comes from?

They are bringing me a lot of joy. I don't know what will happen as I have to find good homes for the babies. My heart will probably break 7 times over. How can I KNOW that they have good homes?

I know I have gone through the same problem of loving each baby & enjoying every little silly thing they do each day they are developing. I fall in love with every one. I have had pretty good luck finding good homes for my eskies (except for 1). The one thing I have found is that by the time they are ready to leave the nest, they are starting to relate to other people. I have found that the puppies will show what they feel about the person who is wanting them. If the puppy feels safe & comfortable with the person, they will show relaxation with the person or family that is picking them up & handling them. If the puppy looks tense, it isn't a good fit.

I know when I picked out my first eskie. there was a whole litter to choose from.....how in the world do you pick just one???? I picked them all up & only Excell was the one that actually hugged onto me......he was the one. I have noticed when placing my puppies that the same thing happens.

Sometimes, people want a female & only have one choice it still works to look at how the puppy reacts to them. I have also noticed that people who are doggie people are the ones the puppies feel calm with also. For my last litter just 6 months ago, I was lucky to find people who I knew would be a good home without doing my normal matching. I was the one that matched up my puppies. Then I just had to keep the last one because it is the last litter for my female (she is now spayed & retired at the age of 10). She loved her puppies. You could see the pride in her face when her puppies were snuggled up to her. I guess that was why she had to sneek in 'just one more litter" before she got spayed. I had told her after her previous litter I told her she wasn't going to have any more puppies because I didn't want anything to happen to her now that she was older. The look of her face after that was really depressed. I oopsed & she got what she wanted.

Have fun with all the stages of puppyhood.....& realize that you are spreading joy when you find the good homes for them....but that is still a lot of laught & several months away.

Mamma has been worrying a lot because they have been rolling and crawling off the blankets. I couldn't find a kid pool so I went to the lumber store today and got a twelve foot long 12 inch wide pine board. I cut it into 3 foot pieces and screwed together and they have a little 3x3 square pen. Mom figured it out before I had finished putting the fresh bedding in so I put the babies in and she is calmer now. She was looking at the closet trying to figure out if she could move them in there. No room in there! She seems happy and likes her food microwaved for 40 secs. She just rolled in something disgusting outside, I watched her with that look of pure joy! How could I clean her after that. Pups are funny, one was asleep on his back with tongue hanging out and I jiggled him because I was worried. Okay, now if anyone laughs at me I swear I shall cry! I can sex kittens, baby bunnies, everything, but how does one sex baby puppies? Is it the same as for bunnies, look for the v shape rather then the round? Thanks Deb. Oh my goodness, there is a monster in the litter first born, 3x the size of the rest who I believe will look mostly like a yellow lab. He will be a big boy like his daddy.
