You probably all remember that I goofed and now have a very pregnant Golden-Doodle who is less then a year old. She has been acting sickly, tired, mopey. I have never experienced a pet's birth as an adult as a choice due to childhood trauma. So I don't know if this is normal. I made a vet appointment and they can't see her till Monday. If we go after hours we pay big. But tonight she is just laying, her belly looks huge, her mate is a rather large yellow lab who can't make anymore babies now. Her eyes look sad. Poor baby. Any advice? Should I have hubby take her in tonight as she is barely moving? She ate half her dinner.

Is her delivery date coming up this week...... if YES, she maybe getting ready to deliver. I found out that most dogs will not eat the last 24 hrs before they deliver.

Is her nose warm? If so, she might be sick, but if not, she's probably ok for now. Has she been into anything that you know of? (to drink or eat that wouldn't be healthy?) If not, then she's probably ok. I know there are some members here with animal experience (eskielover???) and you'll probably get better help in a bit.
I did check my dog first aid book, and those simple symptoms are not for anything dangerous... unless you can add more detail which if you had noticed YOU would have taken her already imo (like worms, or bone obstruction.) Make sure she has a comfy place and fresh water... I hope she feels better soon. __________________ |

If I am right and a dog's gestation is 63 days, she is about 1/2 way there. Maybe 35-40 days. Stupid me didn't write it down. Do they act tired and sick when they are pregnant?

Not usually..... they may walk a little slower or waddle, but usually they are fairly happy and content.
....... Has she had any discharge (if YES - green or yellow) has there been any throwing up? LoVe, Rhapsody - |

had a dog that I let get pregnant and yes at times they just like humans go through morning sickness and being tired. Keep the appointment with the vet so that blood tests and so on can be done to rule out any problems and know those tests might just come up that the bables are taking all her energy (iron and so) so the vet may have you like they did in my case have you giving doggie vitamins just like a woman who is pregnant is put on penatal vitamins when pregnant. hang in there

I've been thru a couple of dog pregnacies and never observed this kind of thing. I'd be as concerned as you are, but I know after hours vets are expensive. I'd try to wait till regular hours if possible. I hope she will be okay.
Sounds like a great match for puppies, and I'm hoping they will be happy and healthy babies! Patty |

You only have one vet there? One pet hospital? I'm so spoiled in that respect! There are at least 4 within a few miles of me here. Hope she is ok.

Calling the vet was the wisest thing to do, it's better than quessing, which can delay immediate attention.
Best thing you did, after all our pets are our children and we wouldn't want to delay getting professional help. I wish you lots of love and luck with this. __________________ |

Thanks all. Temp normal and pulse a little rapid. She doesn't seem in immminent harm. I will be surprised if this baby girl doesn't need a C section due to her age and that the father is a big yellow lab. Sky, there is one place with 24 hour emergency staffing and it is 40 miles away and 90 dollars for an emergency visit plus the cost of the visit etc. If I needed to she would be there in a heart beat.
So, a little humor. Here I was trying to sleep in my 6 year old's twin bed in our room after her pullup leaked and my nightie got wet. In jumps daddy dog and then the kid. I couldn't move, I also had two of my little guys in there with me. Tonight I put the dog crate out with tons of blankets and a crib mattress. I took the door off the crate so whoever used it would not feel threatened. And the sick prego dog is lying on the bare wood? What's up with that? |

Maybe, to cool off? I notice when my dogs get too warm on the couch or on blankies, they flop on the hardwood floors or bathroom tile floors.
Just my guess? I always say mine are having hot flashes, due to decline in estrogen, common in spayed gals, as well as the aging ones. I believe in spaying and neutering. Lord knows there is enough dogs and cats in the shelters due to unwanted or unexpected pregnancies. Also, if breeders aren't going to breed within 1-2 yrs of the *****'s optimum breeding time, they should and usually have the ***** spayed. Hope your gal has a safe delivery, and y'all get some relaxation and peace of mind. Keep us updated. __________________ |

I just saw your post about your preggie girl. You are right, that behavior is not normal for a pregnant dog. I would definitely get her into the vet during normal appointment time unless she really starts to look extremely distressed & not drinking or eating at all. The question about there being any discharge & if the temp is normal would be something you could check at home to help you know if there is something that needs immediate attention. I have forgotten what normal temp is for a dog...I would have to look that up (can be found on the internet). The one thing I have realized over the years is that we can tell when something seems "not right" with out babies. But I know that our gut feelings should always be acted on.....maybe not as an emergency, but should be acted on.
You said that she is probably only half way along? At that point, there can be infections they can get while pregnant, or the puppies being too big for her can possibly be a problem. Usually the puppies size doesn't show up as a problem until the last few weeks when they do their most growth. There may be other things that I haven't heard or learn about in my small breeding experience. It isn't good for a female to get pregnant before they are 2 years old.....I don't know if that might be a problem. Usually a female is still maturing at this point even though they are definitely able to breed & have puppies. If your vet has an ultrasound machine, that is the best way to see how things are going inside. My little female was pregnant & I had the ultrasound done to see if the puppy was ok. Mommy was smaller than the male she breed with but not by much....everything looked ok in the ultrasound but the puppy came out breech. She was able to push it out just before I got her out to the car to head for the vet. Unfortunately my little female wasn't able to produce milk & I didn't realize that was the problem until too late. (something I can't forgive myself for but have definitely learned from & will never let that happen again). Neither of my females ever acted tired or sick at the half way point & usually didn't act that way even when they were due. As a matter of fact, the last pregnancy I didn't even know about until she started digging at different places around my room. Even then (after 5 previous pregnancies) I was getting mad at her for digging until I heard the little squeel of a baby puppy & realized the digging was trying to make a nest. I had noticed that she was getting bigger & her front legs were looking like a french bull dog waddle but thought it was just the new kidney diet I had her on & she was getting healthy & gaining weight. Keeping fresh water is important other wise, it is hard on the kidneys. On my second to last litter, mommy wasn't getting enough water & after she delivered only 1 puppy, she didn't look good. It wasn't something I could actually point out, she just didn't look right. Like I said before, I have learned to act on my gut feelings & the blood tests showed mild kidney problems. Luckily that went away once her body recovered from the pregnancy. She snuck in one last litter because I didn't get her spayed quick enough. As soon as she weaned this litter, she got spayed. Taking her to the vet is definitely a must. You can tell by her body language if she isn't acting quite right. I know vets hate that when all we can say is that she isn't acting like herself. Our gut feelings are the best thing we can use to care for our babies. I am sorry I don't have more help to offer, but hope that your vet will be able to determine what is causing her to feel the way she is acting. Guess I never learned basic math. 5 of them, started 2.5 hours ago. Hubby had gotten up to check on noise of male in hallway and then all dogs went out. Then we are laying there and I hear what I think is a puppy but mom is in bed with him and I am sleeping on the other side of room with child. He keeps saying it's the child. I told him to look under the bed and sure enough was puppy number one. I made him go out with a flash light and make sure no one was dropped out there.
Well, I can tell you that I had my kids at home and I didn't go through that much laundry!!!!! Fourth pup had meconium in with him and it was a lot! Well, they are quite large, the size of ten week old kittens. There was more blood and water then we could keep mopping off the floor and putting towels and blankets under her. Alas she has finished the job and my college daughter is home for the weekend and is laying on the floor with them on the mat of old blankets and "indian" blankets. We woke her to come watch. We have had baby sheep and goats and rabbits but never a domestic critter. What's funny is that I remembered everything from childhood watching animals be born. It wasn't traumatic now because I am in charge. I used to get a little squeemish with nature's way of dealing with placenta and umbilical cords but even that didn't bother me. So for now happy, few thoughts of good homes for golden doodle babies. One has kinda blackish on his ears and I kept checking to see if he was oxygenated. Where did the black come from? I am so tired and must sleep as the child will be up and roaring to go. I am a grandmother!!!!! She had never made it to the vet appoint, spouse had rescheduled for today. Sat. She was in her crate when I came home so I knew something was up. It is a miracle. Happens all of the time and too much but how incredible to see her be a great mom and see these tiny little aliens come into the world. Most were born in the sac. A few times she was too tired at first to break it so I did and wiped the mouth and nose. Is this normal? Also, it is unreal how hard those sacs are to rip with one's fingers. I am so excited, does it show? |
