In restaurants like Subway, the employees wear plastic gloves. I know there's a basic hygiene reason for this, but I also like it because I just don't like other people touching my food or breathing on my food any more than they have to. For me, it's a boundary issue. This food is mine. I'm me. You're you.

The corollary is that sometimes I'll cook my own food without washing my hands first although I always wash my hands and use utensils while cooking for others. I even did this while working at a restaurant although most other employees did not. When I digest my food, I'm essentially spitting on it which is fine with me since it's my own spit.

I just find someone else touching my food gross regardless of whether or not they have germs. The exception being my girlfriend who can spit on my food for all I care.

That's just the thing. For me, it's not about the germs. A certain amount of germs can even make you stronger. For me, it's about personal boundaries. I don't like people breathing on my food either although I've never heard of anyone getting sick by someone else's breath on their food except for a rare case such as tuberculosis. Also, I don't like when a cook uses their fingers instead of a wooden spoon to scrape rice from one bowl to another bowl. For me, it's just a matter of manners. I also don't like when the cook's hairy arms rub the food as they're making it (which has happened at Subway) even though I don't think the arm hair will actually become attached to the food or transmit germs to the food. Another thing I don't like at restaurants is when the food is left standing unattended for flies to land on before it's taken out to the customers. Again, I'm not worried about the germs. I just think it's unappetizing.

I think you SHOULD be worrying about the germs as colds are spread by sneezes, coughs, and breathing i suppose too, i do understand you although as i said for can be ill prepared and i am sure there are people out there who maybe once in a while cough or sneeze on the food/
