I'm not on disability right now but I will be going on unemployment shortly and maybe disability if I am deemed unfit for work. When people ask me I will either say I'm unable to work right now, I'm having a break or I'm just struggling to find work. I guess all of the above are true and if someone asks why I'm unable I will just tell them. I don't see the point in hiding a mental illness anymore and it's just too much effort for me to come up with lies about it. If someone has an issue with that they're not worth being in my life anyway.

I'm in the Uk and have never thought of it as rude to ask someone their career, and I don't know anyone who does think it rude. It's someone asking what you do for a living out of an interest in you, how can that be rude? It'd be rude to ask someone how much they earn, but not what their job is.

In answer to the original q, I just say my career, the fact I'm not working at the moment doesn't need to be said, but if someone does know I'm not working I try to make sure they know it's a health thing, not an unemployed thing.

I generally demand what business it is of anyone's but if it's for a health questionnaire or whatever i say unemployed...i'd rather say that than explain i'm on health benefit, it makes things too awkward and personal.

Telling someone it isn't any of their business makes them comfortable?

I'm an attorney and I have a degree in psychology. I've been disabled since 2006 and the likelihood of my returning to work is nearly nonexistent. I still maintain my license to practice law and if asked "what I do for a living" I say I am an attorney but not practicing law. If people inquire further, I am tell them I am retired or financially independent. It is common social culture in the United States to ask a person what one "does for a living" - I don't take offense. But I commensurate with you all that I prefer not to be asked what I "do"!

Hah! I got this, the other day:

Where do you work? (I don't)
Why don't you work? (I'm disabled)
I see nothing wrong with you. (You don't live with me, either)
Does your man work? (I don't have one)
Why don't you have a man? (I don't want one)
Why don't you want a husband? (because I want a wife)
Why do you want a wife? (dude!)
You have kids? (no)
Why you no have kids when you 47? (*FU, I'm 32, ***!) -didn't really say that out loud.

All this with the intention of just going into the freakin' convenience store to buy a soda, bag of ice and some smokes. Had no idea that I'd be facing an interrogation. Too many prying questions = downright insulting and rude rude rude!!!

Seems that someone just placed an order for a flaming bag of poopy at the store entrance and lost a customer for life.

Yeah, it pissed me off.

Sorry that I do not fit into the template mold of your expectations of a proper woman. No, I'm not.

I hate that people assume that just because I'm not in a wheelchair or blind that I'm automatically taking advantage of the system.

Here's how it went: Most who apply are initially turned down the first time. I was approved immediately, especially after the reviewers saw the multitude of hospitalizations and medicines that I've had to endure. Maybe when the judgmentally questioning normies spend 7 years hospitalized, then they can probably get SSDI, as well. Not like I had to say goodbye to a wonderful career prospect... oh wait. I did.
Thanks for this!
