Hi folks,

In response to some recent unrest here in the community regarding certain behaviors about how a person's posts can be used, we've updated the community guidelines to reflect the new stance:

Basically, posts cannot be used for anything else, anywhere outside of the community, unless the individual has the expressed written permission of the author of the post or contribution.

This is not retroactive, so this is the new expectation of members going forward.

Thank you for your continued support.

Thanks Doc John.

I know we are not supposed to discuss pm content but wanted to let you know thanks for the pm and one going back atcha explaining my intentions -

like I explained on the boards I was not and do not to take posts and threads here to other places like for instance one of the sites I visit with a friend of mine very occasionally is The Survivors Forum and when we are on there we have noticed after some threads have been going on here they suddenly appear over there.

That is not what I am using the print offs for. I am using them to develop more coping skills and so on for myself and my own personal healing which is what I explained yesterday on that public thread.

Thanks again this thread. Updated Guidelines

I appreciate, and support, this new guideline.

It's my sincerest hope that we, as a community, can enjoy what we come here for with more ease.

Much Respect,

KD

Thank you so much DocJohn. I believe prohibiting the copying, quoting, printing out or use of member's posts at other websites or in blogs with out first obtaining consent from the member will go a long way in helping the members here to feel safe. It is greatly appreciated.

I am for it all........ and I would like to say "that I have never thought of using someone's post in such a way" and I am little shocked to say the least that someone else might have done this to another member.

But in the end.............................. Its All Good.

Thanks Doc John - - -
for the revised update to our guidelines and usage as a Member here - - You are APPRECIATED!!!

I also support the new guideline, absolutely.

I also hope that all members will take it one step further and not just "follow the guidelines" but to show respect for others' feelings and wishes, even where guidelines aren't in place to restrict behavior.

Peace to all

Cool but ...

How would one know?

If you post on a message board then you've posted in public.

What you say is no longer yours.

If you don't want it quoted then you shouldn't say it.

Or am I the only one who doesn't trust the integrity of others, and thinks that you should only post what you want the rest of the world to know?
Thanks for this!

I think that it can be hard to find the balance between...

Being so concerned about others using your posts for malevolent intent that one simply doesn't share / participate

And not being concerned at all and posting extremely personal information and linking that to your IRL identity

There must be a middle way, is my feeling on the issue.

What can be done?

I guess if the moderators find that people from here have been doing that then people can be blocked from here as a consequence.

It isn't a guarantee, but it is a gesture towards attempting to make this site safe so people can say all those things they can't bring themselves to say to people IRL...

How about not giving IRL identities out ?

I guess that is up to the person...

I don't give out my IRL identity...

But I'd still be upset if someone used my posts for malevolent intent, however.

If someone tape-recorded me IRL without my permission then I'd be fairly upset about that too.

If I disclosed something personal that I was sensitive about and someone laughed or poked fun or was hostile in response then I'd probably feel upset too...

There are risks involved in interacting with people.
But nothing risked nothing gained.
That being said I think it is wise to be a bit cautious...

Some people here have already disclosed their real names / their real identities. I wouldn't want them to panic or feel bad...

But if you are going to be posting something you wouldn't want your neighbours and your workmates and your family etc to read... Then it is probably wise to stay anomymous methinks...

No you are not the only one. I too follow these same on line safety rules of only posting what I am comfortable having t he whole world know for it is the "world wide web" meaning anything posted is open to the whole wide world and I never give out my real name, address and so on when on line.

Let's not forget that there are two components to this:

1) we need to protect ourselves and be careful about what we reveal

and

2) an ethical consideration of how we react when others feel vulnerable.

We have a survival responsibility to ourselves, but a moral responsibility to our fellow members, with or without the guidelines.

So, bottom line is that the updated guidelines state:

Use of Intellectual Property

All users, visitors and members who access this forum agree not to copy and paste, quote, print-out, distribute, or otherwise use a member's postings or other contributions to the community on another website, blog, or service (including Psych Central's free user blogs) without first obtaining the expressed written consent and permission of the author to do so via a PM or email.

It would be nice if everyone had to click to agree to that BEFORE being able to view the forums (to make sure they saw it), however, it is nice that it is in the guidelines at all...
