Among my hobbies is learning languages, though usually not at a speaking level, just for reading and listening purposes. I recently began learning to speak Mandarin, and don't remember getting quite so exhausted even when practicing french which was my last language, does speaking this language bore me for some reason, (kind of weird I have a fondness for asian languages) or is it normal if you spend more time than you're used to make you tired?

Explaining myself to people who really don't intend on listening to what I am saying about my illness exhausts me to no end. Speaking on the phone exhausts me. I've become a rather quiet person over the years. No one wants to truly listen, so I've given up I guess.
I can see how learning new languages would be exhausting as well. If its your passion tho, I would keep working thru it. I find it intriguing that you have this passion ![]() |

Learning anything difficult is exhaustive. Isn't that a really big learning curve compared to French?

I get tired from a lot of talking. what really wipes me out more than anything is listening to people who go on and on about something just to hear themselves talk, with no intention of hearing me out--then interrupt and talk over me if I do happen to get a word in edgewise.

Chinese is difficult because there are many kanji that may sound similar but if you're not careful you might accidentally curse the person you're talking to. It is all totally based. Reading is perhaps the easiest part. One kanji could have as many as four separate meanings depending on how you say it.

I'm with you rhpcfan. It is a great effort for me to talk to and be around people other than my husband, really. I feel like I am just forcing conversation (and half-hearted smiles). I don't feel it's a big effort to post on here too. Of course it's not the real world, but I know that, for the most part, I will be not judged in whatever I post, that everything's acceptable. This is not the case in the real world.

My mother talks a lot and I can't stand it. I prefer silence to constant chatter.
I don't mind reading the forums here and I enjoy other people's viewpoints. I like it because it's quiet. |

Well, that is one cool hobby. I can understand how learning any new language could be tiring and frustrating at times.
I've gotten to the point in my life where it doesn't take much to tire me out. My mother always warned me that I was doing way too much and someday I'd wish for all that energy back. She was so right! As far as talking goes, yes, I find that to be tiring at times. My husband is almost deaf and refuses to wear his hearing aids. Being the fool that I am, I'm constantly repeating what I've said to him. Dealing with this daily leaves me not wanting to talk at all. And as Silent Void mentioned, I, too, prefer silence. Good luck with the Mandarin learning and hope this feeling passes. |

By the end of the day my kids have exhausted me & I'm so tired of speaking. I tell them "mommy only gets a certain number of words to say each day & you're making me run out."

Latin I wouldn't know, don't have much experience with it but is supposed to be accessible if you're a speaker of one of the romance languages as that is where they come from largely.

Nice topic. If you asked any of the peeps in my life they would say that I can talk/chat for the nation. And @ shortandcute..lolxz my wife says she can never get a word in edgeways with my incessant talking. But its what makes me, me. So I'll keep chattering (just to make sure peeps are still listening lolxz).
@ Fleury. Learning languages is not that hard. You obviously have the will to learn Mandarin so I am sure you will master it. Using a language as much as possible will help assist learning. Or living in the country where the language is from proper accelerates learning of native languages. If you are getting tired. It might be the pace and tempo of the language and not the language itself. g/l with all the learning.

I learned Latin in HS, and it's not difficult to learn. The one thing that posed difficulty was being given the assignment of translating the Gallic Wars from Latin into English. Oh, what fun I had! ![]() I think you should go for it if it's something you're really interested in learning |

When I'm having a depressive episode I feel physically very uncomfortable when speaking, it feels unnatural and I get upset at whoever for talking to me and 'trapping' me in to having to reply. I can only really do one word answers other than "I'm fine, I just need to be alone" trying to explain the physical restriction to speaking that I'm experiencing would be very hard so I have to explain when I am feeling better.
My point is- maybe this is linked to depression? |

Speaking very little makes me exhausted. I had difficulty starting at 14 and became really disconnected to myself (think it was dissociative disorder followed by mood disorder). I could not put my thoughts together, # of thoughts would race in at the same time, my sentences would trail off all the time, etc. I'm not much better now (50) but socializing has always been like lifting weights to me. My mental energy just gets drained quickly (and I can't get this thru to family and PDOC really well which frustrates me).
I responded to paxil very well in '92 and felt more connected to myself and socializing became a little easier. When you don't have to think about organizing your thoughts all of the time then focusing and talking becomes so much easier. Tegretol actually helped me focus better on my thoughts when I tried to hold a conversation (but med made me so tired).

I get tired of talking a lot when I'm manic. And I get annoyed when other ppl talk too much. It makes me anxious which makes it so I stop listening and lose track of the conversation. My brain can only take so much before it gets all freaked out and I withdraw inside myself
