I am seeking some advice on what I should do about this situation......

I found a small male dog on Tuesday and placed an ad in the newspaper on Wednesday to try and find the owner, but no one has called about it and today (5 days later) is the last day for the ad and I have found some one that is willing to take the dog and give it a very good and loving home (inside).

NOW - the problem...... I just found out tonight at 8 pm who the dog belongs to and yet this person has not called about the ad, nor do they take good care of the dog when he is in their presence (two other adults has confirmed this).
AND - when I found the dog in my yard, he was filthy beyond words, was covered in fleas from head to toe, and had ugly big knots all in his hair (as though no one was combing his semi long hair) - not to mention all the garbage and sand spurs I had to remove.

..... The QUESTION
If YOU were ME would you give the dog back to his owners to only have them not take care of him or to have them let him run free and possibly get hit by a car (or) Would YOU not let them know that you found their dog and still cont' on with your plans to give it away to a good home.

Thank you,
Rhapsody -

option B. give dog to someone who will love and care for him. No question about it. IMO, it's the moral thing to do. Blessings on you for caring for this little woofer.

Are you kidding??? Not only do these other people neglect him, which is in itself, ABUSIVE, but they haven't even called or placed an ad themselves. Maybe they were hoping he'd run away and find a new home. Whatever the case, forget them and give the dog to someone you know will care for him. Also, if you find out that the first people somehow get him back, I would call the local SPCA and report these people for the neglect/abuse!

Good question!

I think I would give the doggie to the new ppl, IF you are sure they are reputable and not going to sell the dog for research or something horrible. I would also let THEM know who the rightful owners might be...maybe?

Many years ago when we moved in our first house, my neighbors had this lil dog. He was a tiny dog and prob weighed only 5 lbs if that. Anyway the neighbors kept the dog in their cellar. He was infested with fleas and was always hungry. We had an ice storm and the dog came to my house and I fed him and kept him inside. What I did, without hesitation, was give the dog to a family that wanted him. So if I were you I'd just give the dog to a family that would love and take good care of the dog...

Thanks to every one that responded to my question.... for while I was 99% sure that I was going to give the dog away to a good home - a nicer person, I just wanted to make sure that I was doing the right thing... and all of you guys here have helped me to see that first intentions towards this dog was RIGHT!

I personally would keep the dog myself, but we already have 3 dogs that live in the house and hubby does not want any more pets.... I am just glad that was I able to find a good person that would take the dog, for if no one else would have taken him - he would of stayed with ME (being the animal lover that I am). And YES, Sky - I plan on letting the new owner know of the situation of finding out who the original owners were, for the new owner goes to visit some people down the street of the old owners.... and he needs to know to NEVER take the dog with him when he visit over there.

Thanks again for all the HELP................................ ((( hugs )))
