Do any of you have any ideas on how to get groceries in the house when you are not able to get them yourself?
(MI area) - none of the local supermarkets do delivery. Peabody does not delivery to this area. I've searched the web but haven't found like a generic on-line supermarket that would send groceries. This is a major problem for me - sometimes it means going without any food. Or do you have any other ideas on how to get food? pls rule out friends and family that isn't a solution... Thank you greatly for any ideas that you would have... Sincerely, freewill |

I would try your local Salvation Army or Department of Economic Security, even the Red Cross. There are volunteers out there, just have to track them down. I'd ship you food if I could!!!!

If you can manage it, some cap companies can pick up groceries and deliver them to you.
Do call the Salvation Army because they are familiar with all the local social service agencies. They might know someone fom a local church that can help. I wish you the very best, Jan

I don't know if it is getting out or money that is a problem, but it sounds like it is getting out. You might want to check your community's yellow pages to see if there is anyone who advertises an errand running service.
Have you tried online? I don't know if that's a possibility but it seems you can buy everything else online so I am guessing. Good luck to you! |

((((((((((((((freewill))))))))))))))))) I just did an internet search for "Meals on Wheels" on Yahoo ..... but they list different sites for different parts of the USA (if that's where you are from freewill)...they say on some sites that it's for homebound ppl and senior citizens.

Hey there Freewill,
I am sorry that this has become a problem for you ![]() If you are in therapy or under the care of a Psychiatrist, at your Local Behavioral Health Clinic you may have a Case Manager or Counceller as well. In speaking with them Via the phone or in person,(I am not sure how you do it)you can speak with them about picking up groceries for you if you make a list or they can get a food box to you. I do not drive and when I was very ill my Case Manager did this for me on a monthly basis she even picked up my meds for me. Also, your local DES (Department of Economic Security)office should be able to help as well. Here in Tucson,Az they are the ones that provide Food Stamps,Health Care,Childcare and Disability Payments. They also have people that can help you. Along with Churches and as January mentioned Salvation Army. I hope this may have helped a bit. Good luck to you. (((((((((((((((((((((FREEWILL))))))))))))))))))))))))) Big Hugs, Jlove

You can buy Meals on Wheels meals. Contact local county social services/elderly services (even if you aren't elderly.)
Also, check out Nutri-system. I use them because the food comes boxed without need for refrigeration. I have also gone days without food because of pain flares, in the past. I find QVC.com has the best prices, and you can get on an automatic delivery once a month, can choose 7 days a week or 5 days a week foodstuffs. You still have to buy fruits and fresh veggies, but if you don't have that, there are good foodstuffs in the package that will sustain you. Also, they now have age appropriate adult plans, and are glycemic load/index accurate! Also, check your local yellow pages for churches with food banks. This food is provided (canned, package stuff) by volunteers and given freely. They often have a volunteer who will deliver on emergency basis. good wishes!

I do not know if where you live has this, but most states/counties do.
For handicapped, young, elderly, they have like "home helpers" (maybe different places have different names for this) that will come to your home, light housework, run errands such as shopping, laundry, pet care, etc. for medical related needs they have licensed health care assistance, meals on wheels, many of these things are available according to income, if low income, then you either pay very little or even nothing at all. It's worth it to check into, I was amazed of all the things available when checking out this stuff for my mom, sadly she won't take advantage of this but takes advantage of me. Her neighbors in this low-income apt. complex, say the services are terrific and urge my mom to go for it. There is also public trans. and they have curbside pickup and dropoff for handicapped or just slightly afflicted with joint disease, respiratory, cardiac, just to name a few. Check with your county, we started through our medical center where a social worker gave us listings and phone numbers for us to obtain info, from the county. Lots of luck with this.

I buy some things in bulk from Amazon.com; they have a "Grocery" section now. I keep powdered/canned stuff; tuna, potatoes, cereal, and some stuff like that on hand that way.

another option would be to call the grocery stores in your area and explain your individual situation to the store manager. I know from experience that some managers are just altruistic and will deliver groceries themselves, as a community service.

Other thoughts that come to my mind -- local churches or a local community college. Community colleges usually see themselves as engaged with their communities, and there may be student clubs that can help -- or even a student who wants to earn a few bucks (if you can afford it) who will help.
