I avoid such scenes whenever possible. Luckily I do not need to be exposed to it. So when you go to people's houses got work you observe people watching violent TV? That's crazy. Try to tune out?

I try to tune it out, but it is hard for me because many people play their TV very loud . I have told my employer, but they are unable to help.

Do you go there in the evenings? Or day? Maybe during the day is safer? My dad watches loud TV usually some deeply disturbing news. With violence. I hear you

Mostly I am in clients homes in daytime. I try to stay away from the TV set, but in doing client care, most of the time I am still close to it.

It bothers me. I just started watching a series on Netflicks called The Following. It became so violent that I had to quit watching. It seemed to get worse with every episode. I don't know why they have to show all the violence in detail. I don't even think of myself as being particularly sensitive was bothered.

I, also, don't watch the news anymore because of the negative affect it has on me.

I am ok with fictional stuff clearly made up for movie but cannot tolerate news because it is real!

SeekerofLife, my job takes me into clients homes too. I ask them to turn off the TV while I'm there so we don't have any distraction.

So sorry you're being subjected to something that is so triggering for you, especially in situations where you can't get away from it.

If your clients won't turn the tv off, is there any way you can use noise-cancelling headphones? Or is there any way that you can ask your boss to give you other clients? This may be something that's covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act. If you're not in the US, your own country may have similar laws.

I hope you'll be able to turn the wretched thing off. If you have to communicate with them, it's only reasonable. If you don't, I recommend earplugs and those industrial ear muffs on top of them. Cuts out a lot, especially if they turn down the volume somewhat.
Thanks for this!

I have asked. They say, " I am going to tell you straight up, this is my home, and I will do whatever I want."

Most of my work is housework. So, they would not see it as a distraction when I am washing dishes, etc.

I have thought of using head phones with my cell phone. The problem is I do not know how to download music to my phone.

I have an LG 730. The place I bought it called it both a Venice/Optimus. It is a 3G Android. Is that enough info?

I don't know how your phone works.... Can't help you with that. Sorry.

What I do want to add is that noise cancelling headphones aren't necessarily ones that play music.

Also, be careful using music to block the noise. As much as I loved my parents, there were times when I needed to block out the TV or them arguing. Because of their ages, they were slightly hearing impaired. It takes alot of volume to block that level of noise. That's why I suggested the noise cancelling headphones. I'm pretty sure that they require less sound to get rid of outside noises.

I'm not against loud music, by any means. I love loud music, in my car or headphones, though I try to keep the car sound down when I'm in town.

With me it kind of depends, I mean I actually prefer action/suspense in movies...my favorite show is Game of Thrones. But sometimes it bothers me if I have certain things on my mind or am already feeling on edge.

I have an LG phone, too, although it's older than yours. I found a link for your phone's user manual online at LG LG730 Support: Find Manuals & Warranty Info | LG USA. It will open as a PDF file.

The explanation about putting music on your phone and playing it starts on page 49.

I have to say, it's not all that well-written, but you can see if it makes sense.

There are music apps you can use, like Spotify, that let you listen to music without downloading it. Spotify has some good "white noise" type tracks.

You can also download a BBC app and listen to that.

You always have to worry about using data allowance if you use a music app. If you download songs, then there's battery life to worry about.

I hope you figure it out.

I have a friend who uses noise-cancelling headphones on airline flights and she really likes them. They used to be really expensive - don't know if they all still are.

Ear plugs would probably help. Sometimes you don't have to get rid of all the noise - just enough that your brain doesn't recognize the sounds for what they are and doesn't get triggered by them. That's how it is with me, anyway. I have problems with sensitivity to sounds.
Thanks for this!

That's good you asked. Kudos. They are jerks for being quite so inconsiderate just because it's their home. I hope you can at least get earplugs (cheap) or some other thing to change what's going into your ears.

I know there's a nice plugin on youtube where you can download the audio from videos - like videos of music. I don't know how to get those mp3s onto your phone, though. The plugin is called "youtube mp3" at least in Firefox.
