I'm beginning to realize that the main way I think things through is by imagining myself having a conversation with another person about it. Always someone I know, and often the same person for a certain period of time.
However, I'm not sure if this is "normal" in the sense that most people think like this, or if it's just me? Does anyone else do this? |

Rehearsing conversations you are going to have with a person can be a great way to prevent saying things that will get the person upset.
Other authors of self help books have told about how they had inner advisors that they discussed things with in imagined "meetings". As long as you know the difference between the inner characters and the outer characters and do not confuse them or try to explain to the people in your life about the inner characters, you should avoid confusion and misunderstandings. I am not sure people would in general say it is normal, but it is effective but should be kept quiet in my opinion because there are people that cannot tell the difference between outer reality and inner conversations that "normal" people label unstable. I know you are not one of them, but telling people who consider themselves to be "normal", whatever that is, is bound to create controversy. I would say tell us at Psych Central about that. Do not tell your boss or your neighbor. Other people see things as black and white and would probably not understand.

Don't scare the straights, gotcha!
I think that I can tell the difference between inner and outer conversations, at least in the sense that I don't expect them to know what I told them in my daydream. I might get some occasional "what if?" paranoia about that, though. It is mostly rehearsal conversations, but sometimes it seems like my main way of thinking deeply about things. Would it be worth talking to a therapist about or nah? |

To me, it just sounds like a type of problem-solving technique. Sometimes I make flow charts if I'm trying to make a decision. For me, it's a way of figuring out what I really think about something.
It sounds like you're aware that you're imagining the conversations. I'll bet there are other people who do the same thing. |

maybe i'm stupid, but i thought everyone does that!!!i do it all the time my mind is always rehearsing some conversation i may have during the day before i talk to them. it makes me feel good. one of my docs wrote on a chart that i read that i have an internal conversation. i often wonder too if i have some sort of problem because i even can tell who i'm talking to.i change the way or topic as i go along with the conversation. it feels like i have a friend in the
person i hear. i am a good listener and i hope that is why, so i can help them. i think maybe it is a gift. |

This my be silly but I do discuss things with myself in my head pretty much all the time. Sometimes it's like reading an article or book. Sometimes it's a narrative. I'm an introvert with no friends so my brain socializes with itself lol. It my not be normal but I'm not worried about it, I'm my own best friend

I do this all the time - like it's how I think - and I actually would say it's normal (or at least not abnormal lol). I think it speaks to you perhaps having a heightened awareness to actions/reactions, and being a deep thinker/ introspective. Also, a little self talk would actually do everyone some good if they thought before they spoke. More people should do it. ![]()

I do it. And I know other people who do the same. I don't think it's weird or abnormal.

I do this too. I have imaginary conversations with my T, my psychiatrist, my friend, parents, brother... It's usually about things I would like to talk about in real life. It also helps me to think better/deeper.
I was wondering if other people do this too. It's good to know others do this too. |

Does anyone get a voice telling them to do something - commanding them to do something - and the voice keeps repeating the command until you actually do what it tells you to do ?
I have and it's frightening. It has made me do things that I do not want to do. |
