And so I don't confuse anyone from the US!

Anzac Day

Anzac Day occurs on 25 April each year. It commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war and also honours returned servicemen and women.

The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers - the ANZACs - on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign, its Turkish defenders still held Gallipoli.

Thousands lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians - to this day, Australia also marks the events of 25 April. Among the dead were 2721 New Zealanders, almost one in four of those who served on Gallipoli.

Those of you from DownUnder ...

Melt 115g butter and 1.5 tablespoons of golden syrup. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons of boiling water. Mix in: 1 cup of rolled oats, 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of coconut, ½ cup of sugar. Drop tablespoons of the mixture onto baking paper, and bake until a pale golden colour (about 15 minutes) at 180°C.

I am glad I have my poppy or every damn street corner you get stopped by someone - lol.

I'm not very good at going to Dawn Parades, but I think about it when I wake up - lol.

Although we used to go to this bar when I lived in Welly and it would simply lock down at 3am and you couldn't go in and out till they were legally allowed to open again ... you could leave but not come back. That was a good way to celebrate / remember :>

The only "golden" syrup we have is honey. I suspect that's not what you have in mind.

Usually on ANZAC day, if we are home, we leave the tv on to watch the march to the shrine in Melbourne.
Even if we end up at an ANZAC bbq, the telly is on to watch the march. We have a drink for the boys and girls of the ANZACS who lost their lives to provide us with this blessed life we have.
My grandfather was an ANZAC, so ANZAC day has that extra meaning for me.
Though the day is filled with pride, it also can be tinged with the sadness that we lost so many of 'our own'.
Today, my heart is also with the Aussie soldiers who are currently serving oversees. The hope is that they all come home safely.

No Jan, not honey ... this is thick and sweet and syrupy.

My sister used to make a similar recipe to the Anzac biscuits but kinda like a slice (like an easy my-first-cooking type thing, but it's sooo yummy), and I would get excited ... then she would disappear with the bowl of mixture the little tart.

She was allowed to do it occasionally because it was really just rolled oats and coconut and golden syrup ... then she started making cake mixture and eating that, which was stopped rather quickly!

My sister: 5 foot 8-ish (taller than me) and slim and flat everywhere! Grrrrrr.
