When I am upset, horrible graphic images go through my mind. I don't ever act on them, but they pass through my mind all the same. Is this healthy?

Do you get these from a particular trigger or are these fleeting thoughts and images? My own horrible intrusive thoughts enter my mind for no reason other than I have nothing else to think of.

They happen when I'm upset or angry.

I get these too. Very violent, disturbing, hurtful images/scenarios.

Lately, I've tried to deal with these types of thoughts by flipping the script. As soon as I notice these thoughts are occurring, I trying instead to think of all the things I'm grateful for. I'll let you know how it works out for me :-)

For me, I do see myself hurting people in self-defense. I live in a violent city, and I'm in kind of a constant state of anxiety about that, and I'm often plagued by thoughts of being attacked. I feel a lot of anger about living in fear and insecurity, so that translates into thoughts of hurting/killing the people who I imagine are responsible. Also, I have a lot of thoughts about my dogs being hit by cars or poisoned by the neighbors, and of me being in a car accident, etc. I don't want to be thinking these things, because they're scary and hurtful and leave me feeling very upset, but it's like my brain is hardwired to think such things. I'm sure they're triggered by my anxiety in the first place, and the thoughts just add more fuel.

I got this off calmclinic.com

Violent thoughts are an example of a stressful fear, and interestingly they're not that uncommon of one. Violent thoughts themselves may not sound like anxiety, but they can be directly related to specific anxiety issues.

I get these and negative thoughts, berating myself thoughts, I think it's OCD. I am learning to just tell them to SHUT UP!

Hey
I do this all the time. The thoughts that is. Especially when I'm angry. I don't' act on anything either and it tends to calm me down so it doesn't disturb me at all. I suppose if the thoughts disturb you maybe then it would be considered unhealthy.

I use such thoughts as "flags" to look closer at what I am upset and angry about and why. The fear/upset/anger have to be expressed in some way and thoughts such as yours are certainly better than their actions :-) but looking at what is causing the feelings and what can be done about the actual situation to "fix" it so it doesn't come again for that reason is more entertaining/challenging for me. I learned a lot of how to do that though working in therapy.
