I don't know if this is a bipolar thing, getting older, or what this is but I have noticed I am having a lot of issues with memory and time passage. I will try to explain. Not long ago me, husband and the kids were all sitting around talking about the old days when the kids were little.

I remembered some of the silly things they did but some of the stuff they were saying, it was like the first time I had ever heard it. Whole chunks of memories from their childhood are just gone. All my college classes, they are pretty much gone too and that wasn't that long ago. I have forgotten a lot of the stuff I used to remember from owning goats so I have to go back and read everything again too.

The time passage thing is really disturbing. We were sitting around trying to figure out how old kitty is, she's my oldest cat. I was thinking she was like maybe 7. After much discussion I discovered she's at least 9 years old. It just don't seem possible for that much time to have passed since I got her.

My son was talking about living in the city and said he had lived there for 3 years. I about fell out of my chair because I thought it might have been 1 year. It just does not seem possible that it was 3 years!

I have also noticed I am having a hard time learning new stuff. Things don't stick. I can read it, reread it and by tomorrow I will forget it. My husband says he is having the same problems too so he keeps lists of everything to help him remember.

Maybe its nutritional since its both of us? Is this normal or should I be telling my Dr. Id really hate to have to go an see another Dr and have a bunch more tests done. I might have to because I really don't feel like I am "with it" anymore.

I have experienced the timeline issues too. I hope you can determine the cause. I tend to think dissociation has something to do with mine.

I definitely noticed that since I'm getting older my memory isn't what it used to be. I've forgotten a bunch of stuff I did years ago and having to relearn it is a pain. There's supposedly games one can do to keep one's brain more engaged, but I haven't done them lately.

What meds are you on, if any? A lot of meds cause memory loss similar to what you see in stroke patients. Google your meds and see if memory loss is a side-effect.

Yes, this could be a memory thing. Mine has been sketchy at best but I think medication has made it worse. My therapist has suggest the ECT but I've always had a problem and it was just as bad before the treatments.

No need to tell us, that would be perhaps too much information, but in my own case my family doctor has pointed out that memory issues are not uncommon as one approaches the change of life. (oh yay)

Wow I looked and both of my meds cause memory loss. Both the tegretol and the Geodon do. So I guess that is probably what's going on. I am going to complain to my pdoc about this. I am sick to death of side effects of medications messing me up in one way or another. It could be partly menopause as well.

It still don't explain the timeline thing I have going on. mindwrench you mentioned disassociation. I did have one really strange "event" of I don't know what it really was. It was right after my pdoc put me on Geodon. It was a feeling like I woke up and had been at some different level of consciousness for a long time. It caused a really bad panic attack. I did tell my pdoc about it but he did not seem concerned.

I am going to tell him about all of this and see what he says. I wonder if it has something to do with the loxapine I was on. I was on that for a long time. Long enough that my pdoc wanted to take me off of it for fear of extrapyramidal side effects. Maybe that stuff was messing me up and I didn't know it?

All I know is this all made me pretty upset that I could not remember things from my own children's childhood. My husband, although I love him dearly, does not understand a lot of what goes on with me. He always wants to think positive about my health and MI and I don't think he really sees things the way they really are. I don't think he wants to accept that there's something wrong or out of the norm. I think its how he copes with the constant barrage of dr appointments and medical stuff I have to go to.

I'm 53 and I totally relate to your post, p00dlez. I figure that, for me, it's a combination of meds, age, menopause, and who knows what else. Whatever the case, I find it very disturbing.

I'm in my early 40's and I have suffered with this for years. It gets worse as time goes on. I often will lose chunks of time. I will be staring off into space, thinking 15 minutes has passed and I will find it's been 6 hours. I don't know where my mind goes during those times. I noticed it got much worse when I stopped working....time would just speed up. I usually don't even know the day/date anymore, so I have no markers to gage time with. When I'm depressed I really lose time.....months goes by and when I come out of it, I cannot wrap my head around how much time has passed. I think that most people experience a loss in memory as they age....but if you feel yours in beyond normal aging, be sure to talk to your doctor about it.

Depression, medication and being 62 makes me forgetful.

I am 53 and I am struggling with the same issues.
I don't think I ever had a good memory and I feel like meds are making it worse.
Losing chunks of time is something I can totally relate to.
I have experienced this many time in my life and it really upsets me.
