Hi all, new here and I hope I am posting in the right place. I'm on here because I truly think I am not normal. I'm in my late twenties with two kids. I'm kind, bubbly, and like to have fun.
Seems normal until I admit that I have no true friends, spend time at home 90% of the time, have mood swings to where one moment I'm happy and full of life and the next moment I'm deep in thought and feeling miserable. I absolutely hate social interactions or gatherings and prefer to be alone. Mainly because people have proven to me time and time again that they can't be trusted, are self centered and mean. (I would love to go out, just not around people) And relationships are horrible. Every time I find someone likeable, I always find a way to cut the relationship off because I'm scared of being hurt and don't think I'm enough to satisfy them to where they won't hurt me in the end. So I'm kinda putting up roadblocks for my own happiness. I don't know if I should seek professional help or if there is even a problem. I just know life could be better. My mind just won't allow it and it sucks. Thanks in advance to all who takes the time to respond to this. |

Hi and welcome to psych central. If you are not happy with the way your life is than perhaps you do have a "problem" it doesn't mean there is anything wrong. But if you are unhappy with your life seeking professional help could help you

If whatever is going on is bad enough you feel there might be a problem then that is enough to find out.
Start with your regular family physician. Talk to them honestly about what is happening and your concerns. Most will recognize the basic signs of mental illness. Some may choose to treat Depression or Anxiety themselves. If they feel the problem is bigger than that - or if you request - they will get the whole ball rolling and refer you to a psychiatrist. Now some may disagree but I say that, if you can, opt initially for a psychiatrist before entering therapy. Just my two cents here. But a psychiatrist can prescribe you medication where a psychologist or counselor cannot. On thing I wish to reach out and discourage you from doing is to search 'doctor google' and attempt to self-diagnose. Believe me, you can diagnose yourself with virtually anything and - believe me from my own experience - cause yourself a lot of unneccessary worry. |

It's a problem if it's interfering with things you really want to do. There's nothing wrong with being an introvert--I don't like crowds, hate parties (especially work stuff) too. But 1 on 1 or very small groups with people I know, I do ok.
Definitely talk to your pdoc. It may be depression but it may be that you're lonely (and perhaps bored?) but if your feelings are keeping you from doing things you really want to do then please do check it out with a professional. You mentioned people can't be trusted--sounds like you've had some tough times in the past. It couldn't hurt to talk it over with a doc or a therapist. Whatever you decide to do, we're rooting for you! |
