I have decided to become a nurse! I have an undergrad degree in psychology and a masters in education. I got them because they interested me but I really did not have a clear goal. I did not know what I wanted to do with my life and I just did those because I knew I needed to keep making forward progress. Now, I really, truly think nursing is for me. I am excited to finally have a plan and goal--to know what I want to do with my life--it has taken me 36 years, but now I feel...I feel satisfied with my choice. Also I am really excited.

I am a little nervous about school. I just enrolled in a math class so I can prepare to take the entrance exam. I have 2 years of classes to take before I can start the nursing classes. All of this is going to take some time because I have to do it while I work full time. If I did not have my house I would quit my job and just do school full time--get it done with. But, at my age, I really don't see myself living in a tiny apartment and living off student loans. I already did that --watching every penny and eating beans and rice. And then there is the fact that I still have my student loans from my previous schooling--it is going to take me forever to pay them off--esp since I will be adding to them.

But, all and all, I am excited and I look forward to the challenge. One thing concerns me...the meds I take for my depression affect my memory. I hope, maybe, I can cut some of them back so I can get through school. Its all going to be difficult, but I think I can do it! I just have to work at it.

Anyway, I just wanted to share.

Hurray! That's exciting. I'll cheer you on.I have decided to become a nurse... I'm doing the same thing at age 36 - finally decided on a career instead of just going with what I fell into. Same spot as you too - I have to work at the same time as schooling and I have a house. I will still be using student loans. More power to you if you can avoid that. Hurray for us late bloomers! I have decided to become a nurse...

Good for you! I went to nursing school when I was 34, and a single mom of a 3 year old. I lived off grants and loans. I have been a nurse for 8 years now. You will be able to get a job anywhere you want, the shortage makes it easy to get what you want, where you want, etc. My only problem is that now I am off on SSI because of my disability of Bipolar Disorder and several other things. I hope to go back soon, but I am going to try to work in Mental health instead of the ER. Best of luck to you. PM me if you have any questions! Kat I have decided to become a nurse...

Congratulations.....it is a wonderful feeling to find the right path....the right goal for the future. That gives a good motivation to make it through all the schooling necessary to get there. I am surprised that you have so much schooling to do since you already have your BS & masters. I guess all the pre-requisets add up into several years.

I wish you the best....math is tough....made it through calculus for my computer science BS....so I feel for you.

Good luck,
Debbie

depressme i think this sounds like a fantastic choice for you. go for it with all you have! nursing is such an important job. the peace and comfort you can give people in that position is invaluable. with your existing schooling you have to be able to get the requisite qualifications in less time!
on another note, how is your grandmother? and how are you doing with surviving with the illness you were recently diagnosed with? just wondering so dont answer if you dont want to or pm me or whatever.
go for this goal because you would make a great nurse i think!
