I saw someone yesterday that I hadn't seen in two years. Personally, I don't think we were that friendly so I was a little more formal that normally would be. He completely called me out and seemed a little hurt - that I apparently acted like we were strangers. Though honestly I think he was a little exaggerating...

I have had people comment on this before. I simply can't remember where I am on the relationship spectrum if I don't see you daily.

I mentioned this to a friend and she laughed because she said the same thing. We both tend to revert to more formality if we are unsure of where we are on the spectrum.

While most people we know seem to over do the familiarity.

Anyone else?

I think this is even more pronounced when I am in the presence of yet someone else. I tend to get quite formal when it comes to introductions. I will introduce someone as an acquaintance when I am unsure of where we stand - especially if we haven't encountered one another in some time. Perhaps there has been hurt feelings but that is the way it is.

I was in line at a restaurant several years ago, and this woman starts talking to me and she knows me (my name, where we went to school together, etc.), but I had no clue who she was. I just kind of went along with it, nodding and stuff, but she said she'd Facebook me, but never did. I felt so awkward. I think she was insulted.

Yes, sometimes people exaggerate the closeness of a past friendship. I personally believe in keeping a meeting after 2 years at a formal place. I dont believe in making anything something it isnt especially relationships.

Lol...Im not looking forward to the awkward situation I have coming up in a few months. I left my H 10 years ago ( ran out of $ for the divorce). I am going back there to get my horse & get some of my things out of the house (cloths) that I left that he hadnt put into my moving truck at that time (totally leaving him wasnt actually PLANNED at that time). UGH, thst is an encounter I actually dread & will try to find someone who can go there with me to the house because he is the last person I want to encounter alone even after being away for 10 years. I was seeing red from anger before I left him. Time & living a peaceful life has changed me but nothing has changed him as is obvious by the impacts that are still occuring to my own personal credit. My name is still on the house loan because there qas no way to force him to sell or refinance.

Just thinking about my situation, I can seriously feel for your experience....but you were WISE to keep it formal upon re-meeting even after 2 years.
