Friends,

I have been teaching at a community college for going on two years now. This semester I have been teaching two live classes and one online class.

There was a deadline yesterday in the online class, and received an e-mail this morning from one of my students asking for a time extension.

His family's buffalo, which were raised on his parents' farm within the last few weeks realized they could break out the western side of the property where the barbed wire was rusted and brittle.

He has been chasing buffalo around for several weeks now. The buffalo got out!

Comments anyone?

EJ

It's better than the dog ate my homework. Seriously, it's just strange enough to be believable.

I used to work with a water buffalo and let me tell you, even with four people walking him with special tethers he was a force to be reckoned with. I'm sure that kid has a lot he's dealing with right now. And I've gotta say, it just sounds to strange to be fiction... you know? I can't imagine someone thinking that up as a lie to get more time. I wish him the best of luck with his buffalo and really hope that the enclosure he was in has been properly secured!!! In my opinion he is telling the truth.

I've got to say, I always hated asking teachers/professors for things like extensions, but I am a very good student and things sometimes come up that must come first. In this case the very fact that there is a buffalo running around is not only a problem for the owners, but a serious hazard to the community.

I say give the kid an extension, and wish him luck... he'll need it!

Hi Guys,

I decided when I started teaching that I would accept student stories, unless it was obvious to me they were lying. That way the lie was on them.

It was such a funny story, visualizing buffalo running around, that I decided to share more from the humorous side of things. The buffalo got out!

Hope everyone is enjoying a good day!

Hi Perna,

In rural Kansas where we are currently living, almost everybody raises cattle. Our closest neighbor, whose house is about a mile down the road owns a 1,000 acres. In the five years we have lived here, we have helped return stray "cows" to neighbors' pastures, which are fenced with barbed wire.

Just the image of the buffalo running around with my student trying to track them down and return them to his parents' property struck my funny bone this morning, so I thought I would share. The buffalo got out!

When my husband and I were on our honeymoon driving our RV across the country we went by a sign in New Mexico somewhere with a mere 400,000 acres for sale. We thought that was hilarious; "Yeah, no problem I'll have my people talk to your people and pick the bank up, er, money up from the bank this afternoon!"

EJ,

Gotta realize we aren't living in the city any more. I would definitely not take that as an excuse for an extension if the college you were teaching at was in down town Los Angeles, but rural Kansas.....I guess anything could happen. As long as the excuse has to do with livestock, it sounds valid. Of course, if the next time he says his buffalo ate his homework....think I would question that one....lol.

You will have to save all your rural stories...who knows what the next excuse might be????....make a book out of them someday.

Thanks for sharing this cute story.....rural has a life of it's own for sure,
Debbie
