Wow, you know, life around here is never boring.

My oldest daughter Amy had elbow surgery last Thursday. She's been in a lot of pain since then but controlling it fairly well with her meds.

Tonight, I had just snuggled into bed and started a movie and I hear this god awful thumping and her screaming as she is falling down the stairs.

My heart nearly burst through my chest and I ran to the stairs to see her sitting on the bottom step with her head in her hands crying. I ran down the stairs and put my arms around her asking her where it hurt, if she could move, how she fell (tumbling head over heals or on her bum).

She somehow lost her footing and landed on her right side (the right elbow had the surgery). As she slid and bounced her elbow kept hitting each stair she went down (all of them - 13 to be exact). I was able to get her up and to the couch where she sat for about 15 minutes, checking herself out to make sure there were no broken bones.

We decided it best to head to the ER just in case there was any damage to the surgical site. As ERs usually go, there is always a long wait and frustrating wait. The next thing we see is her surgeon walking through the door (about 1 hour into our wait). The poor guy looked like he just woke up Daughter fell down the stairs

Dr. Casey got Amy's chart and called her right in. He took off all the bandages and the splint. There was already a nasty bruise on Amy's elbow, but luckily, he saw no damage to the surgical site. He was very scared for Amy he told us and I think he was preparing to do emergency surgery. Thank goodness that was not the case and we all left to head home.

Amy also has some bruising on her right thigh and a rug burn around her ankle, but I think she will be ok. I'm sure in the morning she'll be stiff and sore....at least she's got pain killers from surgery to help her through!

It's now 1am and I have to be up in 5.5 hours for work. So I'm off to dream land. Night Night everyone....Daughter fell down the stairs

Owie! Sabby, please don't feel sorry for the surgeon. He ought to know by now that's part of the job...lol in fact, he should have decided if he wanted to be up at all hours of the night when he was an intern! Daughter fell down the stairs

Can you investigate further about why she misstepped? (Safety expert in me comes out Daughter fell down the stairs) Was she wearing shoes? Is there a worn spot on the runner? If no runner, was that part of the wood slick? Is there hand railing there? (Why don't people use it?) Did she have her mind on other things?

If you can help her think more about why it happened, maybe she can prevent it from happening again? Just be sure she doesn't start taking the "blame" for it... nah...it just happened.

Thanks (((((((((((( _Sky ))))))))))))))

You made me giggle, because all the questions out of my mouth to my daughter were, how did this happen? Did your foot slip? Did your foot get caught in your pajama bottom? Was the cat on the stairs? Were you lightheaded, not quite awake? Daughter fell down the stairs She wanted me to stop with the 20 questions hehehe.

What we figured out was that she just took a misstep, misjudged where the step was. She was barefoot the carpeting on the stairs is good....doesn't move and is not slippery or worn. It's an old old house and the stairwell is too narrow for a hand rail, but the way the wall is built, there is plenty of room to put your hand on the shelf like area going up the stairs (don't know how to explain it).

As far as the surgeon goes....yeah...I know he's in that kind of work where he's awaken at all hours of the night. He is a great guy and a wonderful surgeon and doctor. Awesome bedside manner too. But you know me, I feel badly when people are roused out of bed to attend to an emergency. It's just my make up. Believe me though, I don't feel so badly that I wouldn't have brought her to the ER Daughter fell down the stairs Her health definitely comes first!

Talk about ouch Daughter fell down the stairs\
I hope she feels better soon

I remember falling down the stairs as a kid. ALOT. Well, to be more specific, when I was living with my mom when I was about 6 years old. I constantly tumble down the things. It's funny though, people talk about it being so painful but when I fell I pretty much careened down with nothing to show but a bloody nose (and a couple tears 'cause it startled me...and a freeze pop because they always gave me one incase I hurt my mouth or something) I guess I was just a tough kid.

wow. (((((sabby & amy)))) glad amy's ok. lucky, too. whew.

i remember when i was 3 years old, i had a funny perspective, which absolutely faulty. lol. i was at my grandparents' house and they had a basement. the stairs going down into it was "cut off" by the shadows (it was dark) that looked absolutely solid, like you could walk on it. well, silly little brain of mine decided to walk on the shadow only to find that it wasn't solid at all. no worries, i was ok. definitely weird. even weirder is being able to remember the way i processed things then. lol
