So i've been having anxiety attacks at work and told one of my managers, steve. He's not the head person i needed to tell, and i knew that. he then said, "ok i've heard it, but i won't be here for 2 days". the next day i wanted to tell the head manager, but was embarrassed and intimidated. i simply wrote in a note my request (not that i was having anxiety). The response was pretty flat and with no real change. Today when i went back in to work, that head manager had a totally different response, put me right where i needed to be and kept patting my shoulder and getting out half sentences like "I can't have you... " " you can't be...." continuing to pat my shoulder - and then changed the topic. In other words, this asst. manager steve who i had told, actually went to bat for me and must have made sure our head manager put me right where it would be best for me. he didn't have to, he went out of his way, and i didn't ask him to. it was awesome.
from my experiences, i do not often trust a lot of men. working with steve, and especially him supporting me right now has been a really good, positive experience for me with a guy.
I figured it was one to be shared =)

kiya,

What a wonderful thing to share, see there are kind and understanding people out there. Maybe its the time of year or maybe Steve is just an all around good guy, whatever the case, good for you! You deserve a break!

I remember back when I started having the very bad panic attacks with heart symptoms and I was working at a call center.

I needed time off, a leave of abscence, which my doctor approved. He wrote me a note, simply stating that I needed a few weeks off for medical reasons. Well when I took the note back to work, our HR department tried to tell me that the note was not good enough - they wanted to know exactly what was wrong with me specified on the note. Well I cried and cried all the way back to my desk. One of the supervisors, a girl, came up and took me into an office and had me explain what was going on. Well, when I did, she got MAD on my behalf. She told me she thought it was basically deplorable that they would give other people LOA so easily, and give me, a person with real problems, a hard time. She went right into HR and went to bat for me, and BOY she was strong about it.

It really felt great to have someone go to bat for me and she helped me to get the time off that I needed.

Its great to have people like that in our lives.

I know it - he didn't tell me he said something, but he must have - there's nothing else that explains it. And if he hadn't, i well could have been out on the floor (vs. the register where I do better) for 4-5 hours!!! Other people were - and they were mad, too. But *whew*; I don't think i could have gotten through that long again without another anxiety attack. I am hoping today goes just as well.
