So I had SUCH a horrible expierience I wrote a complaint to Papa John's Corporate. The driver made me cry and I lost my appetite. Here's a copy of my complaint.

I ordered pizza on 1-25-08 for lunch. I was in the process of moving and waiting for various people to come set up cable, internet, etc. and was unable to leave to get food.

I placed the order and waited, I recieved a call from the delivery driver asking where my apartment was located (there are several buildings, with several numbers), I attempted to explain but he did not understand. I told him I would meet him outside. I came out and explained since I just moved there that I didn't know how the apartments were numbered. He greeted me by saying "we don't deliver here, they weren't even supposed to take your order", rudely. He then said he didn't see any numbers on the apartments, obviously he didn't even get out of the car, because if you walk up to the sidewalk you can see the numbers on the building. Unfortunately, I did not think to get the delivery driver's name. I understand being out of the delivery area, however, his attitude was unacceptable. A nicer greeting would have been a good start, followed by an apology that in the future I would not be able to get delivery because of where I live.

I do realize that there is a delivery charge, but I generally add a tip if the food arrives in a timely fashion the driver was curteous. That driver lost his tip, and showed his displeasure after I haneded the reciept back untotaled. In my opinion, since I am being charged for delivery a tip is not required and depends on your customer service. This employee had none.

The reason I did not call right away and am writting an online complaint, was because I was so outraged, I didn't want say anything irrational. I waited to cool down and I am still upset! I am not writing for cupons or free food, so please don't offer it. Sadly, I will have to turn to auto foods for delivery, even though it is much more expensive since we have barely any places that will deliver in this area. I am sure you get emails every day saying people will never order from you again...and I hate to be another one of "those people", but after the way I was treated I wanted to throw that pizza in the trash, I wasn't hungry. The reason I am writing is so that the driver is disciplined, I hope no one else is treated the way I was on that day.

My complaint was actually pretty nice, he was sooooo RUDE... I decided it wouldn't be beneficial to say that he made me cry in the official complaint.

I got a call from the owner of the store this morning, he appologized and said that he's had problems with that driver in the past, and admitted he's a real jerk. He said that he will be sending a free pizza cupon in the mail and will be firing that driver! I am REALLY glad I made the complaint, I guess the owner was looking for a reason to fire him and my complaint gave him that reason. I got what I wanted!

WoooooHoooo!!! Free Pizza Rude Papa John's Delivery Driver

The way I look at it is like this....if you don't complain to the powers that be, then they have no idea what's going on and no opportunity to fix the problem right?

And besides....holding it all in and letting it fester does you no good either eh?

SpazKatt,

For thirteen years I was the owner of a well-known fast food franchise. From experience, I can tell you that one of the hardest things to find is that employee that can be relied upon without immediate supervision. Good people are out there, but this driver was not one of them. Employees like that are poison to any service-oriented business.

Many of these workers are young people working their first jobs. They haven't learned to show respect to the customers. Disrespect can come in the form of carelessness, rudeness, or profanity.

Many of these employees also believe that the job isn't really important. There is no job out there that is not important. If the job is not important, it will not exist. As for a pizza delivery person, this is a very important job. People pay a premium to have the pizza delivered. This may be because the customer is disabled. Or perhaps the customer has a stressful schedule and doesn't have time to pick it up.

Some young employees also have trouble understanding that they have to show respect immediately upon meeting a customer. They can't wait for the customer to show respect first. The same thing with smiling. I remember employees that said they won't smile unless the customer does first. I call that "stinkin' thinkin".

You did the right thing by calling to complain. The owner or manager of the pizza place doesn't need that driver destroying his business. If you like his pizza, keep buying from him. He will see to it that this never happens again. As for the rude driver, hopefully he learned a lesson and will behave better on the next job.

(((((Spazkatt))))) I really hate that type of behavior! I am a firm believer that a tip is EARNED it is not a given! Applebees for example automatically adds a gratuity for tables of 6 or more. I will not go there anymore. The last time we went there for dinner (several years ago), my son's chili arrived refrigerator cold, I didn't even get my entree, and my daughter was the only one to get a drink because she ordered a shake that came from the bar. Our waitress was sitting at the bar chatting up a young man. I flagged another waitress to bring the manager. He said that he would take my meal off of the ticket. OF COURSE YOU WILL I HAVEN'T GOTTEN IT!!!!! And he tried to make excuses for the waitress, who was STILL sitting at the bar in our line of site. He made her come over and apologize which she did, not sincere, but she did.

We are a family of six, 1) we are good tippers and if you add a gratuity on you'll not get a dime more. 2) if your service sucks, the manager will be visiting our table to remove that gratuity from our bill!

I have worked in the food service industry and know how busy you can be. I have two rules, 1) you smile 2) you come back and check our steaks. If you do only one your tip is 10% Both 20%, if you're exceptionally pleasant or I see that you're very busy and are still able to follow rules 1 & 2, 25%.

I'm very sorry that you had to go through that! All too often customer service is forgotten these days.

I 100% agree with you AAAAA a tip is earned! I had a friend who was a waitress and felt because she got minimum wage that she should get tips no matter what. NOPE that's not how it works! Tips are for exceptional service, if you don't come back to refill my drink and I have to ask you to refill my drink, your tip is gone!

wow. i work for papa johns and have for over 2 years. have any of you read my post about how i work with idiots?

i have worked at about 4 different stores and have hated all of them. they treat their workers like crap and, in return, we treat customers like crap. i try to be more understanding because i like hearing/seeing when people are genuinely happy because of my customer service, but most of my coworkers don't feel that way. i havent gotten a raise since october 2006. i know its not an excuse because i still dont treat customers like that but yeah, its a crappy company to work for.

oh and dont worry about not getting his name. there is a way to look up who took what delivery by doing a "team member checkout" and it would say your name and address under a person's name. so if they tell you there is no action that can be done theyre lying.

Some people think that working in fast food "isn't a real job" therefore they don't have to show up for work on time, do a good job etc. These are people that are not going to succeed in life.

My cousin was an electrical engineer for Hughes back in the day when they were big. They hired him specifically because he had experience dealing with people, ie working at Burger King to put himself through college.

spaz - sevrers dont make minimum wage. they make less than that. when i was a server i made 2.13 and minimum wage was 5.35. here in illinois they just raised minimum for servers to 4.50. one of my co-workers makes less than minimum wage as a manager because they do a 90 day probationary period where they dont have to pay you minimum wage. a lot of times it feels like some people forget what it was like to work in fast food and some people are extremely rude so its hard to put on a happy face for everyone when people look down on you everyday.

you know how much it bugs me when i stick my hand right out in front of someone and they still throw their money on the counter like "youre not good enough for me to hand it to you." and when i say "have a good day" and they just walk out without a word. its really hard to keep it going when those are the people i encounter on a daily basis. or people lying about anything and everything to try and get free food. you guys are the minority when it comes to customers.

most customers are dumb and rude lol. sucks to say, but they really are. its like when they order food they just lose all ediquette and manners they learned because we're lower than them. if you guys were the majority who were nice and polite it would be a lot easier. why do you think turn over rate is so high?

I'm not saying I'm rude! I mean all I'm asking is for the server to be polite and fill my drinks before I have to ask!

Sorry that I've taken a bit of time to respond! I wasn't saying that you were rude Spaz I was responding to Salukiegirl's comment about customers treating the workers of fast food places like second class citizens.

Again, sorry for the misunderstanding, and sorry for taking so long to reply!

yeah last night a guy comes in and i was completely nice with a smile on my face the whole time. asked him if he wanted to pay then or when he food was ready and he just threw the 20 at me! people really do treat us like were lower than human.

and spaz....if i remember correctly you said it was because you didnt' know the apartment number or something? that is actually an infamous situation for drivers. I guess our biggest problem is when people call up knowing they are ordering then we say 'what can i get for you?' and they say "uh hang on a second." or we ask "what's your address?" and they say "uh hang on a second." I guess it would just be nice to have people figure out their stuff before they call. Because if there are phones ringing off the hook its a little unnerving when someone doesn't know their address. Not that you were rude, its just irking after a while that people don't figure out details before they call. The happiest conversation for me is when someone calls up, says their name, address, exactly what they want. i tell them the total and how long it will be and they say thanks and it takes about 10 seconds.

On our end, when people don't take the time to figure out details like that beforehand, it takes up so much time. And its not like there is one person per station. we all do everything. drivers make pizzas, managers answer phones etc... so when im stuck on the phone with a customer and a driver has a question it just slows everything down. it just seems like the person on the phone doesn't realize how busy we are. not saying you were/are rude or anything, just explaining the other side of the story considering i work for the company that did this to you.
