I told my friends and family for three months that when my legal stuff was over trying to get our foster daughter back that I wanted to shave my head. Of course no one supported me as where I live women have long hair. I shaved my head as a statement that I am reclaiming myself. I have control over me and I am not going to play by the norms.

I took a clipper and put the longest comb on it and off came the hair. I like the way it looks now. Kinda like it's pulled back. I don't have to do a thing with my hair and I feel like I am in control of my hair, myself, my body and my world. It's also a statement about he hell I have been through this past year, or my entire life as far as that goes. The thing is it is my statement with my body and it can't be taken away. Please, do you all understand what I am trying to say?

Wisewoman,

I had a beautician that was able to cut my hair so short that I didn't even have to comb it, I'd get out of the shower and shake my head and I was done. It looked awesome. When she moved, the person that replaced her wasn't able to get it quite right and it just looked hacked. I really miss that hair cut, it was so easy! Go Girl!

Back in my 20's i shaved my head off and on a few times. Always to the skin, then let it grow in a little. It was a no hassle type of thing. Just sucked when right after shaving it walking out into sleet with no hat on. Owww, the pain. lol

Thank you all for getting it and Sertember, I am not sure of the sorry. Sorry I had to go through such hell? Yeah, me too. Sorry I hacked my hair. No, I haven't the slightest regret. I needed to make a statement for me. No longer will I be treated poorly. This is strength for me.

I shaved my head too. Back in October right before my birthday. I had always wanted to and finally did. I really like it. The day I finally did it was actually because my Husband had said go for it. He had always said don't do it, but that day I guess he finally changed his mind and said if you want to go for it. I shaved my head

Now that its growing out though I'm kinda stuck about what I want to do with it now. I love the low maintance.

Anyways, good for you I shaved my head. I'm glad you feel good about taking control.

It is also, to be honest, a visible, symbol for me only of grief. We don't wear black in this country. This is for me to know I can show great pain and mourn alongside side of the celebrating the freedom.....

Gutsy thing to do, Wisewoman. I am proud of you. I understand how symbolic gestures can help cement new ideals and stances that we have adopted.

You go sister. . .

If people don't get it. . . well, you can't argue with ignorance. Don't worry about friends, family or anyone else says. You get it, and there's a community of STRONG short haired women who get it with ya!!!

I used to have very long hair when I was young and couldn't even imagine cutting it. This really feeels fine, cool. No probas and a lot of symbolism is right.

Shaving your head is actually really good for your hair when it grows back because it's all new hair. I've always wanted to shave my head.

I believe I understand the statement... that you have made with your hair...

When in my 20's... I had waist length hair.... and my husband at the time was very abusive...one night.. he grabbed my hair... and I will not go into details..

The next day... I did perhaps the bravest thing I have ever done.. I went after work.. and had my hair cut.. it was maybe an inch long...it was brave because..... it too was a statement... and it said "no more"... "never again shall you do this"...

so I understand... a statement.. with hair....

I love making drastic changes to my appearance. I've done everything from mohawks to long hair. Right now, obviously, I've gone with shaved.

Considering how long I've thought Sinead O'Conner is absolutely beautiful, I have to say I like the look on women.

Ya know I really do enjoy it. Oddly when I have seen movies when women were in very short hair I didn't like it but I am old enough to have seen the birth of hairlessness on tv. I don't see t.v now but in my mind when I run my hand through my one inch fuz I enjoy it. I wore a hat to the post office and then proudly showed the post mistress my doo. She like it. Hers is not much longer. I like the ease. Of course I do wonder how it will grow out. This is the first time in my life with short hair. Once actually the female parent had me cut in a pixie. Not one of my favorite memories since I had braids from my first memory. Well, lets not go there.
