I've been on antidepressants for four years now, is it ever in my future that I will be off the antidepressants?!

Thanks!

I don't know Sunshine...it is hard to tell. I have been on and off them for 18 years--and I know I still need them. But, I keep hoping I will outgrow my depression. One can always hope.

I hope to be able to go off meds completely one day - for now I need them. My pdoc says she won't even consider taking me off anti-D's until I've been completely symptom free for 2 years.

But I think everybody is different.

I have seen many posts about wanting to get off medication. I really curious what people's reasons are. Side effect or cost perhaps? I take a number of psych meds and have always assumed I will take them for the rest of my life. Of course I wish I didn't have mental illness, but since I do taking meds doesn't bother me. I would rather do that than feel like I did before I had them.

Everyone is different I understand. So I'm really curious about the desire not to be on medication.

They gave me anti-depressants once when I showed up at the hospital in tears, but I knew deep down in my heart how happy I was normally and that all I needed was anti-psychotics, my Dr. listened took me off them and I am still quite happy to this day......

I am off and not depressed. I wanted off as in theory they are not needed for life and I have health problems so weaning from as many meds as possible gives a more clear picture. I believe very firmly in nutritional support when coming off the ssris, and especially the newer combined ones.

Yes. I was on them for over 10 years. I am 2 years without them and doing psychoanalytic psychotherapy only. I am so glad to be free of the meds.

As for meds..... each person is different and thus each person will need to find out and be comfortable with what works for them. Therapy, meds, lifestyle changes or a combination of them all, it is all about what works for YOU Is it possible to live without antidepressants?

Take care of yourself!
