I have been away. I have not even been online for a few weeks. I have been shut down and hibernating. I am so sick with worry about the economy and heating oil and food. I had spouse get some oil by hand a few days ago as we need it for hot water and daughter coming home for summer. It cost him 125 for 20 gallons. I am so sick with the worry for staying warm and buying food. I have never seen anything so bad. I am looking for a wood stove and we can cut wood from our land. I can't even afford the wood stove and it does get very cold here. I had insulation on all of the wiondows all winter and the house is very well insulated. I made sure of that. I know compared to many we don't use much oil but it still costs more then we can afford. I also worry that our insurance is going way up. There is no money as it is. I am thinking that we should get rid of the internet. Here it is a big expense. Life is much more expensive here. I feel my stomach tighten as I write this. I am so scared. We will continue to grow and make as much food as possible. My spouse takes a moped to work most of the time. I stay home unless I have to go to appointments or such. How does anyone heat their home? It is time to tighten up even more now.

Vermont is cold. AND hot as crazy the last few years in summer. Yes, cold happens and I am from Maine where it is worse. I have a daughter in college and we do not feel we can move until she finishes up. Thanks for the supportive posts.

I live in NH so I know what you are talking about. Do you qualify for help with heating bills and even with electricity? Your local officials should be able to turn you in the right direction with fuel assistance and electric assistance also.

It sounds like you are doing everything you can to help yourselves. I do hope things work out for you. Take good care.

Thanks Sabby. We are lucky enough to not qualify for assistance. I think that any normal person is struggling big time. We have half of our house shut up all winter and are thinking we will completely close the second floor when it is cold again and sleep in the living room. I know that many are thinking this is just a normal recession but I can say that I have never seen anything like this. It is a thousand a month just to pay the mortgage taxes and insurance. I just wonder what others are doing. How are people making it? We are supposed to be more lucky as I have disability but how can that be true when we can't afford fuel oil? I am so concerned for us and others. I am not sure how much more thrifty we can be. Time to give up internet. Not for the summer since daughter coming home. I guess we will be wearing a lot of clothes when cold returns. We only use about 400 gallons a year. I hope my kids can make it in their own lives.

Oh dear (((((((((((((((((((( ww )))))))))))))))))))) Like many folks just outside of the guidelines Worried sick That really stinks.

Would you be able to consider taking in a boarder? Maybe in doing that you can make up much of the difference that it will cost to heat? I know it might not be an ideal situation...but desperate times call for desperate measures no?

Try not to worry yourself sick over this hon.....we are all in the same boat...believe me. Misery loves company and we got lots of it! LOL

I hope you can find some calmness tonight.....don't forget to breathe hon!

My Mom has gas heat in her home too. Basically she never uses it for heating the home, she uses these electric heaters she bought at Wal Mart, she has a medium sized house and has three of them dispersed through the house. She also closes doors alot, so each room has there own heat and for room that don't need much heat she doesn't open at all. For the kitchen she cracks the stove and puts it on low for a few hours....electric stove.

Her water and stuff is electric though, so that helps.

I understand you're worries, my tank hasn't been above the halfway line since gas has rose the way it has. I feel like I can never go any where anymore because I can't afford it.

I'd definitely get some of those heaters and maybe an electric skillet or two and a crock pot, electric stuff. Even the little stuff helps a lot.

I hope things get better for you.

Wisewoman,

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about!!!! I'm in a constant state of panic. Things are ok now, but I'm worried about this summer when the price of gas is supposed to go sky high, leading to a whole lot of things that I try very hard to avoid thinking about.

I try very hard to avoid any news. I know that this is not the best plan of action, but I just can't take them going on and on. I've made a back up plan of the things that we can cut back on if we need to, but that depends upon hubby working. If things are to get as bad as predicted, there's not a doubt in my mind that his employeer will shut down.
