I'm planning to eventually move out but I don't have the money to right this second nor do I have everything I need but I do plan to move out. I don't have dishes, dish towels, silverware, pots and pans. I don't have anything. I'm not moving out tomorrow or next week but when I do move out I have nothing. Yes, I have bedroom furniture and my clothes but I don't have much else. My dad has a chest that he wants to give me and I've been thinking about getting some of these things over time and putting them in the chest. My mom won't help me because she doesn't want me to move and dad won't help me out with this because he could care less about me. so when I move out I'm starting from scratch on my own. I know it may take time to get everything I want but I figure if I start with the small stuff now then when I do move out at least I'll have that and then all I really have left is the living room furniture. Do you think me getting the chest and putting stuff in there for when I move out is a good idea or is it me being stupid and selfish? Any input is appreciated.

yes you can do that and it is a great idea! also when you get ready you can get furniture from good neighborhood yard sales and try craig's list. you can always find good second hand stuff, but you have to look for it.

I think that the chest is a great idea. Bebop had some excellent suggestions the only thing that I can add is check to see if you have a local auction house. My local auction house is a great place to find good used household items. I also know many people that have had really good luck shopping at second hand stores for that kind of stuff.

do you have a local good will or salvation army store? that might also be an option for you on all furniture not just living room..they have lamps, bath towels, wash rags, curtains, dishes, pots, pans etc...things you will need...they have just about everything..just take it slowly and eventually you will get all you need..it takes time..besides craigslist there is another good website for ONLY free stuff..the purpose of this web site is to keep "stuff" out of the landfills..everything on there has to be absolutely free...you might have one in your area and might want to look into it..its freecycle.com and then just enter your county..you automatically get email notices when someone post something...good luck with it all

Definitely look into the Salvation Army thing.
I don't know if there's a Gabriel Bros. store anywhere near you, but they have some pretty good stuff of that nature very cheap. Good luck! |

I think it's a great idea, that way you can buy stuff slowly, as you have money. Don't know where you are, or if you have this store there, but Goodwill can be a good place to get dishes and glasses really cheap.
Good luck with it. --splitimage |

Heck, the first move, when you don't have any stuff, is the nice and easy one. It's the next move that's hard.
![]() Why would you think you were being selfish, might I ask? Your Dad offered you the chest, so take him at face value and do what you want with it. It's all you can do to avoid parental mind games. Since I've had to temporarily relocate, I've found plenty of ways to get cheap stuff. Salvation Army and thrift stores as other posters have said...also keep an eye out for bazaars and garage sales. I got a nice old TV for 10 bucks, then got a DVD/VCR player from the curb that someone was throwing out. Even had free cable for a while as the guy who moved out of my place never cancelled his service...then it got cut, but it was fun while it lasted. ![]() |

A good way to get an idea of what you may need for yourself is to ask yourself..."Hmmm....What do I use to get me through the day?" (It's amazing what we don't even pay attention to using because its so routine it goes without notice).
Things such as, bathroom accessories, (towels, cloths, mats, etc.). Same for kitchen uses...(can opener, dishes..blah blah, etc.). I'm preparing for another move....after residing here for 13 years! Since the beginning of the preparation for the move, I have been absolutely amazed of how much stuff I've accumulated over the years. ![]() The first move is always the most exciting. Good luck, and enjoy. ![]() |

I think the chest is a great idea. When my sister and I were 12 or 13, our dad made us each a "hope chest". Then every birthday/christmas we got two items specifically for the hope chest. One was nice and non-practical, one was practical. For instance, I got a dark blue long stemmed wine glass and also a set of 4 towels. Then when we were ready to move out, we had items already. I love love love garage sales for needed items. Also, once you get moved in, you can use the chest as a coffee table!

As hurtingintn already said, freecycle.com is an excellent place to get just about anything. Goodwill, Salvation Army, second hand shops... thrift stores. Just places like that. I hope the move goes smoothly whenever you have everything you need to live. Good Luck!

Second hand stores are great! Also you may want to check out Dollar Stores. They have a lot of household things. They may be a bit on the cheap side, but they work pretty well.
I have a lot of rubbermaid furniture. I use the drawers for clothes and such, since I can't afford a dresser. Just some ideas. And starting now is always a good idea. |
