Last night I hear on the news that in order to save money on gas, they are considering switching to a 4-day week (with longer school days I'm assuming) Personaly, I'm really excited and hope that it'll happen. I don't mind having a longer school day because....well, to me, it just isn't a big deal...I have pretty much nothing going on besides school once it starts to begin with, so it's just less time that I'd waste on the internet anyways I'm excited! and it'd be nice to make the weekends a day longer.

When I first heard the news, I turned to my stepdad and told him "Well, it's good that we're trying to save money. Maybe then we can afford the goverment cheese and the aesbestos removal!"

...Neither of which are really important (who needs cheese and as long as you don't disturb aesbestos then you're fine...) but I just feel the need to say that whenever they talk about our schooland money lol.

Kaika,

A neighboring town in Michigan started doing four days a week a year or two ago. I believe that they go Tues-Fri (could not have Friday off as that is football night.) It not only saves gas on transportation, we're in the North, and that means that the school only needs to be heated 4 days. It worked out very well for them. I know their school day is longer, but I do not recall how much longer it is.

Parents aren't as eager to make this change, it means finding day care for the kids one day a week.

Here's MI link approving all schools for four day weeks.

Our school doesn't have football, so friday off isn't an issue. Our school...has a really bizarre heating system based off of a satalite that measures the average temp. of the school. It makes it so some rooms are REALLY warm in the winter, while other rooms you're freezing your butt off. I'm excited!

But man, the WORST thing about school in the winter is when you get on the bus after waiting in the freezing cold (quite literaly) for a few minutes for the bus to arrive, and the moment you step on to thaw off some kid complains that it's too hot and the heat has to be turned off. So you basicly spend the remainder of the 30 minute bus feeling lukewarm and agitated.... and I can't even look out the window because it has a lovely layer of contantly-regrowing frost/ice that is fruitless to get rid off no matter how much you scrape at it. I'm excited!

I am glad that you are excited that they are considering this. Personally as a mother of five I hope they don't do it my area, I stay at home with my kids but when I have appointments it could be harder to find a sitter.

Kaika,

I don’t know if you read the link, but the major complaint by parents is “what about the athletes?!?” Practice after school now means that practices will be completed much later in the night. It’s amazing to me that so many people view sports as a necessary part of a child’s education. In my opinion if you have to decide what to cut, sports or curriculum, the decision is a no brainer.

I agree.

I mean, if it's so important that you HAVE to play on a team or your child HAS to play on a team, then just do it solely on the weekends/vacation/etc. Or, just suck up the late nite deal.

I remember earlier in the year, I was a member of an academic team, we stayed after school for practice every wednesday, and every other wednesday we'd go for a match against another school. We didn't get home on your average night until 7 or 8 o clock. It wasn't that hard going home at 8:30 at night, still do all the work that needed to be done, and go to bed at a good hour. (And heck, I was a Junior last year, which has the most work load here, being bombarded with a kajillion exams at the end of the year, every class was cramming)
