Well, after 3 months of working, I put in my two week notice. My last day will be the 8th of November.

I did it for a number of reasons: both financially and mentally. It was killing me in gas for a two week time frame (just not paid enough). Everyday I was there, it was a struggle.

There is a plus side though. I had my second interview today with a major retailer and got hired for part time seasonal cashier. It is a tremendous step down (for those into "titles") and money, but it is in town here so one full tank of gas should last two weeks. I also discussed with them the possibility of staying on after the holidays. They have two full time positions open and I'm hoping to be considered. The head of the cashiers said there was a good chance for me.

I am not good with change - in any way. I got up my courage and sent an email to my boss with my notice in it. My stomach is in knots and I am terrified. I'm trying to look at the positive here: it is a huge retailer and the chance of moving up is much greater and more likely; I get discounts at any store anywhere; it's in town and I'm not going to be driving far in the winter; I can do cashiering in my sleep it's been so long a part of my life; and lastly, maybe at my age I can have a career and stop job jumping. But my nerves are stretched to their limits and I'm scared.

Wow--you should be proud. You knew you wanted to make a change and you did it! It sounds very thought out and you have a plan in place. Good job!! (no pun intended!) I feel your pain regarding the driving--I drive 44 miles one way! It's horrible enough, then throw in the winter and it's horrible! I like how you have so many positives. I wish you luck on talking with your boss. The best thing is to be honest and non-confrontational and don't be intimidated. You did what was right for you and I think it's great!

your reasons for change all sound reasonable to me. i'm not quite sure you are afraid as you send in your notice, what can they do to you when you are quitting?

you've got skills for the job you are going to do and it will be a shorter safer drive to work in winter weather - it sounds like a pretty good deal coming up! hang in there, it's gonna be ok!

Thanks everyone. It seems to me that I am trying to rationalize what I did though because I'm scared of the unknown.

I think in the long run, esp. with the this company, it will be for the best, but there are always those doubts esp. with change for me. I still haven't heard back from my boss and that makes me nervous.

It doesn't sound like rationalization, to me it sounds like you are expressing your well-thought out ideas.

Regarding your boss, I can tell you as someone who is in management, I've been told when people email us their notice, we are not to respond, we are to wait for them to come to us (which I can't do, I don't think it's right). If this isn't someone you see daily, you may want to place a phone call just as a follow up. Good luck!

It's been nearly 3 years since I quit my soul-crushing mindless cubicle job (not to say all cubicle jobs are soul-crushing, but mine sure was).

Since then, things have been scary...less stable, for sure...but I'm leading a much, much more rewarding life. Despite some of the disorder, the differnece in how I feel about myself and my life made the change worth it a million times over.

Congratulations on having the courage to do something so hard. Good luck to you with your new career.

Any change is scary, but it sounds like you have good thought out reasons for making a change. I really hope that you get one of the permanent positions.

Sounds like you have a good plan in place. I am considering quitting my job, but trying to find a new one with benefits is difficult.

I wish you luck.

((((planning))) You're making big decisions there, and looks like you will come out on top. Self care can be very difficult at times. And making a good decision when psychologically impeded with stress etc is difficult at best. I trust you have done the right thing, and will make it work for you. Good wishes!

((((( Mary Alice ))))) Good for you for realizing you needed this change in your life for the better of yourself. Change is scary for me, too. So, I understand that, too. I am sure this new job will work out and you will feel much better. Best of luck to you!

{{{{{{{everyone}}}}}}}} what would I do without the support of this place? My T answered my email today and said that I am certainly over qualified for the job and would do it proud. He also told me that it is better I go before asked to........I've called in a number of times or left early because the job got to me so badly.

I think this move will be good. Thanks for the support and well wishes.
