These kids headed out this morning. I'm not sure of the temps today but yesterday the wind chill was -45 degrees. Have you ever ridden a horse at a slow pace in the freezing cold? I have, and it was only for a couple of hours. My hands and feet were completely FROZEN. My friend STILL laughs at me for the way I got off and walked after getting off that horse. I was afraid my feet and legs would shatter into pieces. ![]() I'm impressed with the way they are showing their honor. They are giving, not taking. We tend to honor others by pampering ourselves with parties, food and gifts. If you're so inclined, I'm sure they could use some warm thoughts and prayers. |

Yep, LOL They are riding horses starting at the point where Sitting Bull was killed in North Dakota to the point where Wounded Knee happened in South Dakota. They will be riding all day - sunrise to sunset - and it will take them about two weeks. They are provided with warm clothing and food at the end of each day though. It can be brutal with the subzero temps and howling wind on the Plains, and it's not like they are fully dressed for the elements. It's hard to imagine their relatives made that trek starving and dressed in flimsy clothing. One of their leaders, Big Foot, was old and suffering from pneumonia at the time. I have a hard time getting out of bed when I have a cold! ![]() Last edited by KathyM; Dec 16, 2008 at 03:58 PM. |

Its a link, Rayna. There are a few pictures and a story (excerpt to follow) "...riders plan to begin the annual Big Foot Memorial Ride on Monday at Sitting Bull's grave site. They hope to finish at Wounded Knee battle site in two weeks. The trek has been made the past 23 years to honor the more than 250 men, women and children shot here Dec. 29, 1890, by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in the Wounded Knee massacre..."
There is more to the article, but that is the gist of it, if you will *smile* Wow, you guys are fast or I'm slower than I thought *wink* |

Oh wow that is really amazing. Thank you both for the description. Really puts things into perspective doesn't it? Next time I'm moaning about how hard it is to navigate here now with a talking computer, I'll try to remember this story..... wink.
