I don't know which dose is the best and it doesn't always work or causes nightmares.
Benadryl helps a little.

The most I have taken is 3 mg. It didn't help me at all. Have you tried calcium and magnesium combo in a 2:1 ratio. Start with 600 mg of calcium and 300 magnesium. You can find it all in the same pill in the vitamin aisle at Walgreens

Less is more with melatonin, over 1 mg and it can have a reverse effect, downregulating the M1 and M2 receptors it activates at lower levels (ie it stops them responding to more melatonin, they switch off). This is one reason why people find it ineffective or to cause undesirable side effects, the doses that are sold over the counter can often be far in excess of a therapeutic dose.

I occasionally supplement it with promethazine which is similar action to benadryl (which is harder to get in the UK) - it is more powerful as a sedative - but both should be used with caution as they have anticholinergic effects with long term use, I wouldn't use it every night.

You can! Your body produces this naturally. No addiction or habituating I would think.

If I take any more then 3 milligrams, I get awful nightmares, sleep paralysis and hallucinations.

I took 10 milligrams once and the next day I felt like I got hit by a truck.

I have the gummies of melatonin in my home. 1 gummy is 2.5mg and I have taken 5mg. This actually came recommended for one of my sons by the pediatrician.
I have used it and actually I've grown fond of this supplement. I've taken prescription sleep aids before in the past. I don't find this as quick acting-thankfully and doesn't require me to have 8 hours blocked off like a prescription would. I find that I wake up feeling rested, focused and energetic.

Knowing about my own sleep disorder, I look at it as something to help regulate my sleep back to a steady plane. So, maybe I can take it for several nights in a row and then go without for several nights because it doesn't create that sense of need.
