My cat had his 19th birthday yesterday. He's been ill for a few years- vision impaired, deaf, arthritis, increasing kidney insufficiency, hyperthyroidism... Over the last few weeks he's had a couple of urine tests which showed an infection in the kidneys and he had a blood test done a few days ago. We got the news today- his kidneys have now gone into failure. They don't know how long he has... the vets are going to research all of his medicinal options to slow down the kidney progression but I guess it will probably come down to us deciding when is the best point to say goodbye. I always hoped he'd go by himself first.

My heart goes out to you. I so sorry your kitty is sick. It is always a hard decision to make when they get that sick. I have to make that decision a couple times and it is never easy. You will know the when the time comes that it is best for them to let go. Nineteen years is a long time to had a pet, so I'm sure you have lots of good memories and these memories will help you get through the hard times. The grief will get easier with time, but the memories never died. Best wishes to you.

Really sorry for you and your kitty. 19 is an old boy but its still hard to lose them. Kidney failure is so common. He may well just pass by himself. A kitty I had a long time ago did and it was very peaceful. God bless.

Thanks both. I think it is going to be even more of a shock when he does go because he's only six years younger than myself and we've had him since he was a year old!

Pandoren, I'm facing something similar with one of my cats and one of my dogs. It is hard. Both of you will be in my thoughts.

I know its sad, but these things do happen.

I hope it does not emotionally effect you too much- ie its a cat.

Personally I have never felt emotional attachment to cats, but I love dogs.

Well, his urine tests have shown that he's still passing blood despite several shots of antibiotics, so the next move is an ultrasound costing over £250 or something to see what's causing it... apparently could be anything from bladder stones to cancer. Will be booking him in for Wednesday

Well, I am currently in a darkened room keeping under observation one rather spaced out cat. The ultrasound showed that one kidney has pylonephritis, which we've got antibiotics for, and the other kidney has some kind of shape on it which could be a cyst or could be a tumour, they aren't sure, but basically it's a "we'll see how we go" situation.
