I've got a Great Dane and a Bichon. My Dane, Beasley, is deaf. My Bichon, Bob, is a holy terror. Both are from rescue. Bob is about 9 years old, and is large for a Bichon. Beasley is a three and a half year old Harlequin. I LOOOOVVVEEE my doggies!!!!

(and my three kitties)

I'd love to hear from other owners of these breeds. But also, I've had St. Bernards (my first Saint was the absolute love of my life for the five short years she lived) and English Mastiffs. I love huge dogs!!! But I also love Bob, and could see my way to another Bichon someday.

There are photos of everybody, or will be soon, at my profile in case anyone's curious

They are so awsome!! Your Dane is exactly like I am looking for for my sister for her birthday. I wanna get a black and white one and name it him Cow LOL She has always wanted one and my p's are finally in a place where she can have it. My mom has 2 little dogs a Bish mix and a Shih Tzu. Monkey the Bish mix is a terror and snaps when he is pissy. He ever bites my mom and I think my dad will punt him

Thanks for sharing about your dogs and your potential dogs!

Bob Bichon bites. He's bitten every member of the family but one. 'Scuse my French, but he's a little ****. But we still love him.

Beasley the Harlequin Dane would never think of such a thing. I love the idea of naming a Harlequin "Cow"! Or Rosie or Bossie or any other typical cow names.

There's a dane site called "Harlequin Haven" you might be interested in.

They're more work than other giant breeds, though, or at least mine is. He was more active and required a lot more exercise and activity than I expected, especially during his first year. But he is a love.

Thanks for the info. I will go check it out.
And the english mastiff is beautiful!! They are adorable dogs too. We had a St Bernard for a while, Manny, and he was fantastic but extremely over protective of our home. Eventually had to have him put down for biting people.

Well, the only big dog I've ever had was an Akita. She was a big sweetheart and one of the most intelligent dog's I have ever known in my entire life!

Biscuit is ADORABLE!!!! Is it a girl-biscuit or a boy biscuit? (Typical giant breed question, here) -- how much does Biscuit weigh? How old?

My family's had a total of four English Mastiffs over the years. They all had really different personalities from each other, but they were all mellow and sweet and wonderful.

One loved swimming, one was terrified of water. One was incredibly smart, another was dumb as rocks. One of them loved to chase bugs, which was often hilarious to watch, as he was so huge and the bugs were of course so tiny. One had bag issues - as in, if you walked in with a shopping bag, suitcase, large purse, or big box, she would FREAK OUT. It was comical in a way, but also occasionally destructive. One time the dishwasher was open, and somebody walked into the kitchen where the dog was, carrying some grocery bags. In her panic to get away from the bags, she tore the door right off the dishwasher!

Ah yes, our big doggies. Gotta love 'em.

We have an Akita neighbor. She's beautiful, but not very social. She's very discriminating... she likes only certain people and dogs. If she doesn't, watch out. But she is also very smart, and very attached to her family.

Usually they have a really sweet and docile temperament.

But I once briefy adopted a beautiful St. Bernard who was vicious. It was such a shame, because he was so gorgeous. But he ended up having to be put down, too. For a while, Saints were really popular, and there was a lot of inbreeding going on. Apparently that ended up producing some Saints with wierd personalities. Luckily, they aren't as popular anymore, so it's more likely they won't be flawed.

I've heard that this inbreeding thing often happens when a particular breed gets popular. When 101 Dalmations came out both times, cartoon and real life, Dalmations got real popular and there was lots of inbreeding, I've heard. Probably, with Marley and Me, there will be a lot of white Labs getting popular, too.

With a giant breed dog, it's extremely important that they be friendly and good with people, because if not, they can do a lot of damage! It's especially important if there are children around, of course.

Yes the saints were popular like during the Beethoven movies were first out. I was reading that rescues were worried about Chichi's because of the movie Beverly Hills Chi (can't spell the rest)...Glad my pommies haven't had staring rolls yet. Just snipets in some movies....
