I have been out of work for almost 3 months now,a rarity for me. Throughout my life I have had numerous jobs, some earlier ones when I was in 'a career'. But now it seems I have lost direction and focus,I seem to be more of a 'dabbler' than before. I have some interests but just can't seem to follow one thing. I know if I go back to work chances are it's going to end up being the same thing,I'll get tired of it and it'll end up being a hassle more than fulfilling. After reading up on a.d.d. I'm not so sure I have some of those symptoms. I went to a depression screening a couple years ago and I think they mentioned something along the lines of anxiety/depression. In school I was told that I was smart and creative and had 'potential'. By the way I have little money or resources to 'take this to a professional' so I was just trying to get some ideas here.

Welcome to PC, Joe. Were I you I would go to the library and check out some of Barbara Sher's books, http://www.barbarasher.com/index.htm especially I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was. Her other books are equally good too though, Wishcraft was first but It's Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now is enjoyable also.

Your description of yourself reminds me of me when I was in my 20's and early 30's. You also might want to read Dr. Clay Tucker-Ladd's online book http://www.psychologicalselfhelp.org/ he checks in here in the Self-Help forum below too.

Sher's books are very interesting and exciting to read. I'd get "workbooks" to twiddle with if you like that sort of thing. Christopher Biffle wrote Castle of the Pearl which I like (Perna means pearl in Latin :-) and my especial favorite is Following Your Path by Alexandra Collins Dickerman. If you're a glutton for punishment and want to find out what is really wrong with you :-) read Napkin Notes: On the Art of Living by G. Michael Durst, Ph.D. but be warned I threw it across the room several times :-) I'd have to say though that it's in my top 5 live-changing books and I still use its principles today to get myself back on the "right" track when I don't like the way I'm behaving.

Hello Joe and welcome to Psych Central. If you live in the United States there are mental health resources in your county that offer Free or affordable mental health treatment. Many times the Salvation Army or Jobs and Family Services in your county can help you with the numbers needed to get yourself acquainted with mental health help in you area. Also a medical Dr can help give you medication until you get to see a Therapist and Psychologist, if there is a clinic in your county. I am also going to give you a number for the Free Medicine Program you can call this number for the Free Medicine Program 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You need to ask them to send you an application for free medication to give your Dr to fill out so you can get medication for Free 1-800-921-0072. I hope the best for you take care Soidhonia

Another book you might look for is "Who You Were Meant to Be: A Guide to Finding or Recovering Your Life's Purpose." By Lindsay C. Gibson (IIRC). It's not about finding a diagnosis, but about sorting out what you want to do with your life, as opposed to what you might be trying to do because someone else thinks it is a good idea and you feel like you need to buy into their advice. A lot of times if you really aren't getting anywhere it is because you aren't working on what you really want to do. This book shows you how to find out what you really want to do, and how you really can and why you should do it, and how to overcome all the obstacles that have been holding you back. It was life-changing for me, as it allowed me to give myself permission to work towards what I wanted and needed to do.

Some ppl are just "scanners" where they need to have different jobs at different times of the year. There's a lady who teaches about it, on PBS.

You've received some good support here, let us know if it's helped. What Do I Have?
