Is it just me but everytime I go to a doctor and they ask me what I have in reference to mental health and I tell them BPD.I get the strangest look like what the hell are you talking about. One doc asked, 'where did you get that from'. I mean they know what depression is and bipolar, even like OCD or antisocial. But when you say BPD you get the look. Is it just me?

Do you say "BPD" or "bipolar"? Some interpret BPD as borderline personality disorder, so that might be a possible source of the confusion.

I think she means borderline personality disorder and the doctor gave her strange looks because he/she (doctor) didn't know what the hell borderline was. Did I get that correct?

Wow! Me too!

I have been looking for a new psychiatrist to go with my new therapist, and THREE of them even rejected me based on my diagnosis of BPD.

i used to have a psychologist thing, and when i mentioned some friends of mine, with DID. when i mentioned the disorder he was like whaaaaaa?
i immediately lost respect, given that being a 16 yr old girl i knew more about psychology than him.
he needed new shoes too.
i think BPD is a disorder that Ts arent very fond of. its a shame theres such a predjudice, but there is.

Hi,
I do find this a puzzling. There is a group of Ts and psychiatrists based in the US. who specialise in PDs and have developed a special approach to treatment for them. There are some in New York, some in California, and a few other places. I have been doing phone sessions with one of them, and am going to visit.

What I'm surprised about is how they're not more known about and that there are still people reacting like that if you mention a disorder.

I know, for Sherryanne, if you're in the Caribean its more difficult, I had the same experience here in the UK. Its seems like we've been doing our homework and they havent. !

You can get information re the Masterson Institute who do this approach from: Dr Pearson: 001 212 860 0151.
good luck,

riverx
