Recently I posted about giving away all of my art and putting all of my supplies away... I have lost interest.
Grrr....my daughter is late on an art project at school and got permission from her teacher for me to help her work on it after school. I went once already and her teacher knows I am an artist and even asked me to help work on murals around the school as a volenteer... I just don't feel like it and turned him down.
Tonight my daughter has asked me to go back and help her on her project again.... I couldn't say no to her... I really don't feel like it but I feel a sense of duty as her mother to help her out. I am starting to feel anxiety building up inside... I paint very well... I don't understand my own reaction. sense of duty..

When you were a child, were you "allowed" art? Or, did you have to "prove it" later?

It was a natural gift... my adoptive family later pushed me to go to university using my art.... I never went though.
Interesting question and I'm clicking a bit why you ask.... your opinion is greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to nudge you to answer your own implicit question. It is my belief that you already know the answer. It's just that you haven't asked yourself the right question.

Why didn't you go to university?

Do you feel like you are not "really" an artist? An impostor?

What is it that makes you feel like you are being asked to be dutiful? Why is this a chore, rather than e.g. an opportunity?

my daughter showed up saying she is sick...
Larry, I didn't go to university because I got pregnant and married.... I am a complete diappointment to my family and have felt guilty for yrs.
Now what? I went to Italy before f-cking up and I am completely in love with Michealangelo, the rennaissance, the artcictect, sculpute, paintings....
My Trauma(s) changed me, I can never go back....

Right. You can't go back. Here is a perfect chance to go forward, and you're scared. Feel the fear, but do it anyway. The art. Duty? Opportunity? There's something symbolic in your feeling of anxiety, when the task itself is not one that would exceed your ability in any way. You have an opportunity here of not just doing art with your daughter, but trying to figure out what the message is. You're trying to tell yourself something. Can you figure that out?

Larry,
i'm sorry, my frustration is still somewhat there....
I no longer feel a sense of duty when it comes to art...
I did perhaps for awhile when I was younger... but my artwork for the past so many yrs has been positive for my self-confidence etc. In quebec I have been encouraged to do showings etc. ....
I am really, at this point, not sure why I have turned my back on my passion.

I was trying to help you answer your question. [shrug] Maybe it will come to you, yet.

I thought your sense of duty was in relation to your daughter's request? Sometimes I get confused just before a breakthrough, so I still have faith that this current situation is trying to show you something about yourself.

We can learn more about ourselves in ANY circumstance... so I believe, [shrug} in that case I have many other opportunities to figure it out.
wishing you the best,
Patricia
