Ten years ago my parents divorced. It was one of the best things my mother did, but unfortunately I blamed her for "taking away my dear father" for the next five or six years. My reaction, I believe, was nothing but a result of my father's psychical abuse even since I was a baby (he'd act violently against my mother, calling her names - later he began calling me names too, and he still does it - or act like she was his slave). I think what happened to me was something not unlike the Stockholm syndrome, because I used to deify him even though he acted like a monster. He used to give me a task of 50 math problems/week, alongside the work I had to do for school, in order to take me to his place during weekends. He then started calling names and act violently against me too - I remember he beat the hell outta me in the 7th grade because I was too frightened to answer him "what's with the 2 from the H2O".

To the subject now. Ever since they separated, I've been having tics. It all started with head shaking. Then, eye blinking, then both, then verbal tics, damn they were so many I lost track. Right now I'm having a complex one: I close my eyes, shake my head and then do both simultaneous. And of course the verbal ones persist. Is it because of the trauma? Is there anything I can do to stop them? I had short periods when I won't do any of them, but stress seemed to bring it all back.

I'm sorry for all the traumatic stress you've been through. Have you asked your doctor about these tics. The 1st thing that comes to mind is Tourettes but you say there's times when you don't have them. You should have this evaluated by a doctor. I hope this gets better and find a way protect yourself from further abuse.

usually things like tics starting out of the blue like the way you posted is a physical /neurological problem....example about 5-10 years ago I started having the same tic'ing problems you posted about. after many years of ruling things in and out, trying meds and other treatment options we finally arrived at my diagnosis ....Multiple Sclerosis a neurological disease where a person has tic's and other accompanying symptoms.

my suggestion contact your medical doctor and your mental health treatment providers, they can have you go through medical and mental evaluations which will let you know what this problem is with in you.

Thank you both for replying!
I went to a psychiatrist after two years of tic'ing. He told my mother I was fine, nothing to worry about, it's perfectly normal for kids to experience this. Last winter I did a NMR and they said nothing was wrong with me. The psychologist I'm currently seeing told me nothing about tics, even though he did notice them. Should I see a psychiatrist again?

should you see a psychiatrist again?....only you can answer that.. but I follow what my treatment provider says......if it bothers you then by all means its time to look into the problem and seek out treatment providers for professional help.

also wanted to add some medication side effects do include tic'ing of all kinds. thats the first thing my treatment providers checked out with me.
Thanks for this!
