Hi there,
I've read a little bit about each but I'd like to hear about other's responses to these treatments for childhood trauma. My T has suggested I look into these and said that talk therapy really doesn't help with PTSD. Although I've read that talk therapy doesn't help it still leaves me feeling a bit annoyed and not so happy about this because it made me feel like it's pointless to talk about my situation and in a way it feels like my T doesn't want to talk about it either. It's taken me such a long time to get to the point where I can utter certain things and hearing that makes me feel like I'm being abandoned in a way. Let me just say I like my T a lot but this is just how I'm feeling about it and I do plan to bring this up. Does anyone get the feeling that this is an easy out for T's to just say go get EDMR or Brainspotting? Anyways, if any of you have had experience with either I'd like to know how beneficial it was. I know brainspotting is relatively new and there are a lot of success stories but I'd really like to hear how this has helped right from someone who has done it. I know I need to do this but I'm just trying to get informed as much as possible. Kindly, nutters |

EMDR helped with my daughter's ptsd--symptoms like flashbacks and nightmares were greatly reduced, her social anxiety got a bit better as well. Still needed meds to help with the depression but emdr seemed to be of benefit. There were some hard hard sessions, tough memories to desk with, a lot of anger and grief to work through. She was in talk therapy for years with no real progress too. Her therapist suggested emdr when not much else we tried helped so it wasn't our first choice and I don't think it was an easy out for her t. I think it's one of the few therapies that research suggests is actually effective for it's which is notoriously difficult to treat.
If you do decide to try it, would you be willing to share your experience--good and bad--here? |

Thanks for sharing that. That's what I'm afraid of with EMDR. At the moment I'm leaning toward brainspotting. EDMR kind of scares the heck out of me because of all the talking, brainspotting there is far, far less. Whichever one I ultimately decide to do I will share my experience. I hope it does alleviate my PTSD symptoms.

I wasn't able to do more than one session, as I deal with more than just PTSD. (My bipolar needs to be more stable before I continue) but brainspotting was interesting. I can definitely see how it'll be helpful later. What makes it so nice is the fact that you don't even really have to talk and when it's too overwhelming, your doc knows how to take you out of it and back to a safe place. Keeps you from dissociating and also makes you more willing to dive into the memory because you know you can get out. I recommend it for anyone who's not too sure about EMDR.
