Yesterday my psychiatrist recommended I try EMDR. I'd never heard about it before and have only done a little bit of research about it, and I'm not quite clear how it works.

I would love to have input from anyone who has tried it, and whether it worked well or not. I'm not scared to try new things at all, but for some reason I'm a tad spooked by this one. It's hypnosis but it's NOT hypnosis?

It's not hypnosis, it's activating each side of the brain, back and forth while thinking about a memory of the trauma. You do feel drained after doing it. I did it a couple of times then switched therapist, so I really didn't give it a chance, and I wasn't in the right place to do it. I would give it a try again though. Just make sure the person doing it is credentialed , do research on it and see if that person is doing the right procedure. They need to talk to you and make you feel safe first. I really think you would be okay.

It's totally different from hypnosis. I would know - I've done both.

I'm way too tired for a long post right now, sorry.

Yes, I'm currently doing EMDR. It's nothing like hypnosis. I personally haven't noticed much improvement yet. Still plugging away at it though. Who knows?

If you try it, let me know how it works. I'm willing to try anything but I don't have much faith in anything actually working. This sounds interesting, perhaps they will offer it to me. I don't want to talk about any of my trauma ever again though.

I have had EMDR & have recently been referred to have more. It was very successful for me & I no longer have flashbacks or SH. It also enabled me to actually speak about the abuse without it overwhelming me completely. However, I still have trauma 'residue' which needs further work on. If you respond well to it, you will find it life changing. Go for it because you have nothing further to lose by having it. I found it exhausting. I'd come out of a session & when I got home, I'd sleep for hours. Good luck.

You don't have to talk about the trauma at all. You just have to hold the images in your mind. You can then say whatever comes up or not, or cry or scream or do in your head whatever you want. There are no rules! It's incredible what happens & impossible to explain. It is brilliant!!!

. This link is not EMDR music but is very like EMDR music which I like to listen to ( I have EMDR and do well with it ) Listening through headphones you experience binaural beats which are used in EMDR or forms of bilateral stimulation. It's a very strange thing but I find it very effective. Just make sure a potential T is properly trained and registered.
