I hate going for Pap's and physicals, they trigger me terribly and wish I was never there.

WELL , tomorrow I get to go for one, oh JOY! Pap smears- ladies, trigger?

I don't go, and I don't even have PTSD - just not my idea of fun.

This was the quickest one I had, so I didn't get triggers. I've never had one done so fast actually..

nah no triggers, I don't bother getting them. I am celibate, so there's no reason to check for that. Most of the results are incorrect anyway (dumb labs are full of incompetent ppl also.)

I also don't do mamograms. Read a study where the incidence of breast cancer has increased 250% since they told us to get yearly mamograms.

This is not, I repeat, increase in detection but the increase in cancer. Doctors that oppose mamograms say that they believe it is because the test crushes and causes any contained growth to metastasize ... well they have fancier terms for it. I'll wait for the ultrasounc test to be perfected.

And while I'm on a soap box, I'm not keen on the colonoscopy either. I am thinking about the pill camera instead... but with the scope, yeah they can remove anything they might find, but the incidence of the doctor hitting an intestinal wall and tearing it, causing an infection and a few days in the hospital (causing an increase risk of picking up an infection) is too high to warrant it for me.

<font color=green> let's see what else?....

I've heard about studies showing that mammograms do not detect lumps early enough to improve survival rates anyway. But that they will continue to be recommended. I have no intention of participating.

I've never had a problem with this kind of thing. But I am in a relationship and it's very 'active' and I go mostly because I am on the pill, so in order to be on it I need to get checked out. I rather know then not know if a test came back abnormal. My sisters did and she had to go to a cancer clinic, they cut a piece off for testing, and it came back ok. So whatever it is it wasn't cancerous. Likely just some sort of infection. Which can pretty much always be treated.

As for the mamograms, I haven't really had one, just by feel from my family doctor. But i'm sure if their was ever a lump i'd notice it. Kinda hard not too I guess, even though i've never had to worry about it.

If you are not active then there is really no need to that's for sure.

I was surprised that I didn't get triggered this time around, I didn't go yearly, I went 2 yrs later. I don't even know when my next appt will be, I guess when my perscriptions is out.

Well ladies, I think the paps is a good idea, about the mamogram, well I'd say that is a waist of time. I have two cousins that died from Breast Cancer because it was detected way too late by the mamograms they both religiously had done on a yearly basis for 5 - 6 years. It was too late to do anything with both of their cases. They both left small children and a few family members very angry for the uselessness of the test.

But, It's up to every person to decide what they want to do.

Sundance,
I completely understand how you feel. Getting "it" done can be very stressful and draining. I refuse to have a male gyno (my mom thinks I am insane because of it) and even after my appointment I cannot let my boyfriend touch me for days.

Stay strong honey,

You know? I think it's all in God's hands, if it is ment to be it will happen with or without the exam.
I don't worry about stuff, unless I have a reason to worry.
I don't have cancer ( I haven't heared otherwise so I assume), and that means I don't have a reason to worry. I AM HAPPY BY CHOICE.

Yeah but with me it's a fear, and I start to get panicky. And talking about it makes it worse... lol.. I'm 24 and shouldn't have to worry about it too much...

But I see it differently, and am more scared I guess. But the only one in my family that ever had it was a great aunt and she lost one of her breasts to cancer, but she survived...

I'm really glad your exam went well! My last pap was fast and didn't hurt at all. It was great! I always tell the doc who's doing it about my past too. That usually really helps. they tend to be more sensative then. I get regular check ups on everything. there are always horror stories, but I choose to keep tabs on my body and what it's doing. I'm almost 38 so that's a bit different than 23. Enjoy your youth and the health that goes with it. And congratulations on listening to the doctors and getting the regular exams they suggest even though your scared! Annie

Yeah... but to be able to detect a lump on your own, you have to be familiar with all the glands and such that you have.. which means you have to do self exams regularly... and have sensitive fingertips.

I know the scientific community is mixed on these issues. Including the incidence of cancer... now they say that having cancer in your family doesn't mean you will get it... just that your gene might mutate also.

One that I do consider is ovarian cancer. For that, there are symptoms that don't go away. But they are symptoms that any menstruating gal might have from time to time (bloating, for one) ...

As a side, you know, most doctors and researchers are still male.. and they are making HUGE strides on prostate cancer detection. I've always said that if the test for that required men to have their scrotum crushed for a picture, those tests would have come a whole lot quicker!

LOL

I'm 24 Pap smears- ladies, trigger? If I don't hear back from him that means my tests are not abnormal. I think I was worried about breast cancer cause we were talking about it and I think I got a bit more then I use too and that was likely the cause of the anxiety. All is well now, and my doc hasn't called so that is a good sign. I don't feel comfortable telling him, I want to get another doctor , but it's a pain in the butt.

Definatly gotta watch for ovarian and cervical, that's what paps and stuff is for, and doc says it looks all fine, so not so panicky anymore.

hmmm no, the usual test for ovarian cancer has a letter-number combination title... sheesh brain doesn't work. Pap is only for HPV, something you get from being sexually active.

Sorry, but I think if you bother to get a pap, make sure you call and ask them for the results, the numbers on any tests, or a copy of the report. SOOOOO many times I have had a nurse, or even a doctor say, oh it's fine, but when I got a COPY of the report from them, and took it for a second opinion... the second doctor would "come unglued" because it was a definite indicator...

This is true for all sorts of bloods tests and such... you are getting the tests for a reason, meaning, you don't feel quite well... and you might be "within the parameters" according to a nurse, but you might be at the very bottom of those parameters, and treatment would help you feel better!

Just some thoughts.

I think I can trust my doctor, my sisters was abnormal and they called her right away, so I'm sure if it isn't normal they will call me as well.... If I really want to know I can always call him kinda deal just to be sure. Otherwise not going to worry about it, it'll cause too much anxiety.

The abnormailty they thought was cancer and she went to the cancer center and it ended up being fine... they scraped the inside and everything, and told her not to worry that she'll be ok.

Also, I have never had an actual mamogram. He did a breast exam by feeling around it pushing in areas.. I haven't done one in 2 yrs.

I think that the reason why i'm worried about this is because my one side of my breast feels... tender? is that the write word. I recently gained a couple pounds no longer 98lbs Pap smears- ladies, trigger? Could It just be me worrying about this cause my body is changing and maybe i'm a bit bigger in the chest then I use to be? Because it seems to be on one side that bothers me no where else? Could this be related to weight issues? I'm over 100lbs now, which is healthy for being 24...am I making this out bigger then it really is? or am I just being paranoid?

hmmm hormone changes can cause soreness, and if say, you were bumped or your bra was tighter on one side, that side could be just sensitive enough to hurt. There are also glands and tendons and such that are affected by our body chemicals when we become stressed...

If this soreness has been around a while, and is worsening though you probably ought to have it checked. That's why we need to learn our own bodies... but I have been told many times by doctors and nurses that a sudden onset of pain is usually not a major problem... that cancer in the beginnings is generally painless... but that is why we GO to doctors, right?

Hey Skybark.

I actually brought this up to my psychiatrist, this tenderness situation. And she said it likely is cause I got a bit bigger from gaining a couple pounds and that it is normal to feel that way. I think I was making it worse cause I was thinking the worse, therefore it felt worse, know what I mean?

Also it's almost that time of the month so that is likely the cause as well.

Funny now that I brought it up to her it's no longer bothering me.

I told my mom too and she said she gets it on the side once in awhile as well.
