I have been given some free visits with a psychologist that is using
EMDR therapy on me. I have abuse issues and also trauma issues. I am
just wondering if anyone on the board has gone through this and is it helpful
I've only done two sessions so far. I am a bit intimidated but really would be
happy if it helps my symptoms.

Hi Jasie,
I've been doing EMDR therapy for a few months now, I think it can be helpful, but I dont thing my therapist is very experienced with it, so it could probably be better. I've had some successes, but then my PTSD/life kinda comes in and smashed any successes after a while. But my friend who recommended it to me really likes it, and it has helped her, although she still is disables with PTSD. So anyway, I dont know, but I have heard of people being "cured" with it. good luck.

Hi Jasie,

I have used EMDR with both of my T's. I find it really helpful but it is very stressful, but the relief comes quick enough unlike traditional desensitization trauma therapy.

If you are like me who has a lot of trauma stuff, it takes longer because there is so much to desensitize. But luckily some of the trauma are clustered together. When I am a T someday, I will make sure I am certified in this.

Good luck with your healing

i have never had the stability to properly evaluate this approach, though did have some sessions one very positive and the other quite the opposite.

the `bad' experience was with a social worker who had some workshops on doing this, and felt that it would `cure' such issues as being denied access to housing, etc. due to my service dog. ie. no matter what exogenous issues frankly beyond my control, emdr would `fix' everything.

in contrast, the person who first did this with me was non-judgmental and approached this issue as one of simple cause/effect. you have sustained damage (mechanically and/or chemically) that in some ways have changed your brain and we are going to try to improve/heal the injuries.

i would suggest ya give it a try, with caution? if i could have kept seeing the first practitioner, i believe it would have helped a lot.

Not too sure what to include here, but my `issue' is a traumatic brain injury, and secondary to that, trauma triggers. I do not have `ptsd' though I am a survivor of violence.

I have also done a good deal of advocacy work, legal for women trying to escape abuse, and as a support person and art geek, sometimes doing respite care for kids who've been traumatized.

Hi Jasie,

The thing is when it works, it almost is like a miracle! It is truly amazing sometimes. I have read most of the books on it, and this is my favorite. It is easy to read and so good, I read it in one night. I found it at the library, but now it looks like it is available in paperback. It is written by a therapist who during training for EMDR, discovered for herself, how it helped her. Good luck with your therapy. Take care.
