i am trying to find the daily fda approved amount of neurontin....the insurance has suddenly decided to quit paying for neurontin, even in its generic form, stating the dr. is prescribing more than the daily fda approved allowance of 100 mg. per day....so far, i cannot find any info to confirm this statement...everything i find says up to 4,000+ is okay and my daughter takes 3000 mg daily...we cannot afford to pay $300+ per month for this [prescription....both my daughter's shrink and the insurance co. drs have huge egos which are getting in the way of solving this problem...sigh....if anyone can help me determine (a) is there is a daily fda approved amount and (2) what that amount is, and 93) where i can find this info i would be appreciative....

They're feeding you BS.
Here is a link to the FDA website, directly linking to the approved Neurontin package insert. On page 17 of the insert, it discusses doses of up to 3600 mg/day. http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/20...6slr001lbl.pdf Lar |

Before you take on your insurance you need to be cautious. You didn't say what the reason was your daughter takes Neurontin. The FDA has only approved its use for seizures and herpetic neuralgia. If your doctor is using it for bipolar illness your insurance might use that against you - not covering unapproved uses or "experimental" uses. There is clear data that does not support Neurontin's use in bipolar, though there may be other indirect psychiatric benefits. Also the doses quoted are generally also only for the FDA indicated uses. Good luck.

I am sure from my experience with (neurontin) in the early marketing campaign being prescribed by a Psychiatrist for Bipolar Disorder, later to find out it was never FDA apporoved for such a disorder. I am sure since the Lawsuit brought against the manufactures of Neurontin and the MANY side effects of the drug in its early uses inappropriate and illegal prescribing bonus and paybacks to the Psycians and Psychiatrists, that the Insurance Company has to be very careful as to the type of MD prescribing the medication and for what reasons in order to 'cover themselves' of a lawsuit, in my opinion I would go directly to the prescribing physican and investigate the dose and for what reason and what the insurance company is saying. Then perhaps ask of possible adverse side effects of Neurontin on your daughter and the dangers as well as alternative to this medication. I was taking it for extented period of time during the pre-lawsuit and finding out's of the Company's Marketing strategy and found out alot of my problems I was having as a 20 something adult ex)bedwetting was a direct of the Neurontin. Please ask questions to the doc about this med and its dangerous side effects. Take care
