Hi I am thinking about asking to be put on an anti depressant. I work out a lot and it is an important part of my life, I would like to be able to continue doing that. I tried seroquel before but it zapped all of my energy and gave me a sort of muscle weakness to the level that I could only lift a fraction of the weight that I am used to. It felt like a failure. Are there anti-depressants that do not make you tired or weak?

I don't have a dx yet, its been depression, bipolar, borderline, ocd, and now it is ptsd, but I get bouts of depression that make me want to end the mental pain I am in and my other emotional states are numbness and intense rage.

I badly need help, please if you have a few minutes can you give me advice on meds if you have had similar experience.

Personally, my choice is St. John's Wort. It works for me. And generally doesn't make me tired, although especially when I first started, if I took it with chamomile, valerian, or any other herbs that make you tired, it knocked me out. Now I start the day in the morning with St. John's Wort and Mate (should be an accent on the e), and that's just about right.

Prescription antidepressants that are noted for less or no sedation are Bupropion, Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram. Venlafaxine and Duloxetine are also mild for sedation.

There are many anti-depressants that don't make you tired, but you will unfortunately just have to through trial and error figure out what works for you. Hang in there and don't give up.

I take Effexor and I haven't had any tiredness that I can relate to it. I also take a booster of Zoloft.
The biggest side effect that I have heard from others is more of a sexual nature. Not being able to reach orgasim.
Good luck and like psjeff said it's a lot of trial & error. You may try ten before you find the one that works for you

I've been on Wellbutrin and on Lamictal. Neither makes me sleepy but Wellbutrin produces a bit of brain fog that I don't like so much. But psychiatry is like one uber-sensitive science experiment so I have no idea how either would affect you. Good luck in your search for the right meds.

Don't give up on meds. There are several out there that the Dr. has tried me on and I couldn't tolerate them. I'd be in a fog all the time and very dizzy. So I'm back on the combination that works for me - Proxac, Trazodone and Wellbutrin. The Prozac interrupts my sleep so I take te Trazodone which does have sedative effects so I take it before bed. The wellbutrin regulates the other chemicals in my brain so it works well with the toher two. There are side effects from the prozac - delayed orgasm or not being able to reach orgasm which is why I was trying some new meds. Celexa and Cymbalta are supposed to have lesser side effects but those are the ones I couldn't tolerate. I decided the sexual side effects were better than being dizzy all the time.

Work with your Dr. He/She will be able to find something that'll work for you. Hang in there.

Joe

I found Effexor and Wellbutrin not to be sedating.

I am on both Lexapro(40mg) and Wellbutrin XL 300mg, and I take them together. I do not have any problems with sedation, in fact I think they give me a small boost. This combination brought me back from the edge of the cliff, if you know what I mean, and I have been stable on them for the past 4 years.

Hope this helps.
