Has anyone here taken Abilify? If so what was your experience? Does anyone know much about the risks of Abilify?

A psychiatrist prescribed it but I'm afraid to take it because of the risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome and tardive dyskinesia. If I were to stop the medication at the first sign of these would I be safe, or would they be permanent regardless? I'm really nervous about it and not sure I want to try the medication.

I took abilify with no problems. Not everyone has those problems. Probably in relation to how many people actually take abilify, it's not all that common. You could probably look up the incidence percentage on line.

I was in the initial study to see if Abilify could be used with and SSRI as an adjunct med for depression. Now I still take it, and have for about two years. No bad reaction (I only take 2mg per day), or what you've described. I think it's very safe and plan to continue with it....Good luck.....Y...

I take Abilify 2 mg daily, and I touch wood, have never had any bad reactions or side effects, if you have concerns speak to your prescribing doc. I've been on it over 2 years now.

I took it for three days and experienced muscle rigidity, shaking, uncontrollable contorting of the face and neck. It was very painful. I stopped taking it immediately and it all went away the next day, I was very sore afterward. None of those symptoms have come back.

I have been on Abilify for about 5 1/2 years. For the last year I have taken 30 mgs a day. Its a been a very good drug for me. Very few side effects and lots and lots less psychotic features. Meds have such very different affects on different people though, I think it is really hard to generalize.

It works well for me, with no neurological side effects. I take 2.5 mg. I've been taking it for a few years.

I am just beginning Abilify TODAY 5mg. I am so nervous, especially since I have read about weight gain - but I have also read several testimonials about happiness and energy? Two things I haven't experienced in YEARs.

I haven't heard of too many people who have weight gain issues with abilify.

I took Abilify back in August and September of '09. I was in the midst of a highly hypomanic or manic episode and it did nothing to calm me down. If anything, I was higher on it, so the doc took me off after I got up to 10mg a day. Who knows. I'm on so many meds, maybe just the combo was wrong. Now that I'm in a depressive episode, I kind of wish I could get that lightning in a capsule back.

All the atypical anti-ps have the risk of tardive dyskinesia. As far as I've read, if you discontinue them at the first sign of any uncontrollable muscle movements, the problem is usually reversible. Sometimes not, but it's very rare to get it to begin with.

Now I'm on Geodon and with my other meds, it seems to be helping to balance me out. I've been on practically every atypical and my two favorites are Geodon and Abilify. I didn't gain weight on any of the atypicals. In fact, I've lost 7 pounds since the summer.

Good luck to you. I hope you find a combo that helps you.
