Has anyone here, who has been diagnosed with depression, taken drugs to treat hypothyroidism despite having normal test results?

I've read that some psychiatrists have found that the addition of thyroid hormone to patients suffering from refractory depression often is helpful, even when the blood tests are normal.

Funny you just mentioned this while I was thinking about how my doc should tweak my thyroid meds. I think I need a slightly higher dose.
See I always would hear "your tests are within normal range" until it was so bad then it showed up hypothyroid.
Yes, I was being treated for depression (still too) but when I was finally put on synthroid my mood and general well being improved greatly, took about a full 2 months but it was amazing, for so long I kept telling my gp's my ill feeling is NOT depression, I am depressed cause I feel ill!
I have read so much, and have read that those "within normal range" aren't always true, cause our bodies are not identical as whoever the "normal range" has been based on.I too have also read that pdocs will include thyroid meds. for certain depressive disorders, and in my heart I think that is a good thing for pdocs. to explore that option besides just prescribing or dosing up on AD's.
Sorry, I digressed but sometimes it's not always depression but can be thyroid and/or hormonal, and if it is depression so often including some thyroid meds can boost the efficacy of our AD's.
Now if only I can convince my gp to let me try an increase in my thyroid med. and if it isn't right for me just go back to present dosage, like what's the big deal if she and I try it? I get so frustrated with her at times.
My pdoc noticed improvment with my moods when I first started thyroid meds. but he won't get involved with that, it's for my gp to deal with.
Oh well, I guess I rambled enough here, I apologize, I just get so chatty when I see something I can relate to or share with someone.
Take care,
DE

I am scheduled to have my thyroid removed at the end of the month. The mood aspect of the thyroid, or lack of it, scares me to death. I have dealt with severe depression for years and I am scared that this will put me over the edge with regards to my "treatment resistant depression". I have spoken with my gp though, and she feels that being on the high side with the bloodwork is a plus Hypothyroid & depression regardless of what the labs say are "within normal range" I am seeing a new pdoc in a couple of weeks and hopfully she will be on the same page with my gp. I also have an endo, but have only seen him once and will not see him again until 6 weeks after the surgery. All my thyroid labs have come back normal over the years, but maybe ::crossing fingers:: my thyroid IS one of the problems, and things will change for the better. Hypothyroid & depression Well, thanks for listening and good luck to you!
