I am in the process of switching from Respirdal to Geodon. Some of my bloodtests came back not too good so I need to get off the Respirdal.

I was a bit shocked when I read that this med was used for psychotic disorders. I know respirdal said the same thing, but it added and other ....

I will have to discuss this with my doctor. The Respirdal worked quite well. I am upset that I have to change.

I have also heard good things about Geodon. Anybody have any good things to tell me about this drug.

Geodon is in the same classification as risperdal--atypical anti-psychotics. This group of drugs, while used to treat psychotic disorders, are also prescribed for other purposes. For example, they are used as an adjunct to anti-depressants. I am not psychotic but I do take seroquel, another atypical anti-psychotic.

I have no personal knowledge of geodon but i believe it is somewhat more activating than other drugs in this category.

Although Geodon is an anti-psychotic medicine used in the treatment of psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, it is also a medicine with other uses too. Just like aspirin is a blood thinner and a pain reliever, Geodon can be used in bipolar disorder, as a med to blunt impulsiveness and anger and may have some other uses too. Typically when it is used to treat anger it can have some calming effects, helping people to feel more pulled together, less falling apart and more in control. It can block a lot of suicidal impulses and self-harm behaviors, especially in borderline personality disorders and DID.

i'd have someone watch you your first several days on the drug. My brother was extremely sedated at times. Just a mild caution. Geodon???? Drugs react differently on everyone.

I have Major Depressive Disorder, and my pdoc put me on it to see if it would help for my depression. It helped with my mood (it's the only drug that I've been on that's helped my mood), but I had really bad nausea with it so I had to stop it. It made me really sedated if I took it during the day, so I took it at night.

(((emwell))) I don't know about these meds at all. But you know, once a medication is approved, it usually has many "off label" uses for good too. I agree, though, talk with your doctor. Usually when I get nausea with a med, I get a med for the nausea until we find out if that's the "only" side effect I'm having.

I take Geodon and am having good results with it. My mood swings aren't as severe as before and my voices have all but disappeared.

I took geodon for a while. It made be very sedated and finally I quit taking it because of that. Otherwise I did not have any adverse side effects.

My Geodon side-effects were:
(1) tardive dyskinesia (involuntary facial and tongue movements) and
(2) akathisia (involuntary repetitive movements).

I'm not a fan of antipsychotics. These side-effects can become permanent even after treatment is stopped. Please educate yourself on these side-effects, for more info: Tardive Dyskinesia & Akathisia symptoms
