A little history, I have been on Prozac for 2 years and took myself off it 6 weeks ago because as my T pointed out it wasn't helping my depression , obviously. I have tried Welbutrin, Zoloft and Paxil and they didn't help either. My family Doc basically said "pick one" when I inquired about a different medication. So mu questions is which one? T suggested Effexor. Without meds I'm feel scattered , like my mind moves faster then my body, I get anxiety, obsessive thoughts and have a very short fuse. I'm easily set off, I've become *****y. Any suggestions?

If your prescribing Dr. is only a gp, I'd ask for a referral to a psychiatrist. They specialize in psych medictions and can work with you to find one or a combination of meds that work for you. I find I need a combination of meds.

I would never trust a Dr. who just said "pick one" when it came to psychotropic meds, particularly if you've tried several unsuccessfully.

Could you go back on the Prozac to feel better, and keep working on the depression with your T?

Splitimage - I looked for a psychiatrist but I live in a small town n there r not many to choose from and the ones that r here r busy and hard to get into. Echoes - the Prozac didn't feel like it helped that's why I stopped taking it , T just pointed out what I already felt and knew. I just wanted to see if anyone had anything they took that seem to help, but I know we r all different. Thank y'all for responding. Sewerrats - my step daughter takes that and it was one of my options, I may try it.. What could it hurt right? Thanks again.

I see your in america , lexapro is the newer celexa an is not scripted in england as not generic, but you can get it. COMBO meds are ok if you have a shrink that knows you well. I myself wont try combos it just means more side effects, an if one isnt working , how do you know which one it is. There is new research saying now combo med takeing is no better than taking 1 med an raiseing an lowering till you get your theraputic dose

Sorry, I misunderstood. When you said this ^^ I thought you meant that the Prozac did help with these things. So it sounded to me as if going back on Prozac you help you feel better in these areas, and then could continue working on the Depression with your therapist.

When your therapist mentioned that the Prozac didn't help your Depression, I wonder did that mean to not take it, or that the real work on Depression happens in therapy?

THERAPY will never help a chemical imbalance, therapy is most use in single fears or problems that have made you depressed. If like i was told at therapy i have a chemical imbalance, we cure you of one problem an another takes its place, you need meds to correct the imbalance.

Well, not everyone is of the opinion that depression is a chemical imbalance.
Therapy does help depression and some use only therapy to feel better.

I never said it was for all depression, didnt you read my post, there are lots of different types of depression. If it comes out he blue with no reason , then most likely a chemical imbalance an what use is therapy for that. If you have reasons for your depression ,ie abuse, loss of a loved one, ect ect , then therapy by all mean,s. But if its through money worries then ,theropy isnt much good there.

If it's money worries, medication also isn't much good.

I think we should all do what works best for us
If your symptoms (see my 1st reply) were helped by Prozac, it sounds like returning to Prozac would help your symptoms again. Or am I not understanding your post? Did the Prozac help with those symptoms, but now that you aren't taking it, the symptoms have returned?

For the poster to return to prozac is cool, but for prozac to return to the poster is another story

My depression, If I even buy that diagnosis is a direct result of my chilhood and adolescence. Not ruling out a chemical imbalance, but the abuse: mentally, physically and sexually ( step brother and neighbors) definatly didn't help. I think it's a combination. Of things. I can handle most things without meds, but the anxiety and sadness I have trouble with and my T just pointed out that obviously the meds weren't working.
Thanks for this!

Have you or your doc considered Lamictal? The anxiety coupled with sadness seems akin to agitated depression or a "mixed" state.

Those are incredibly uncomfortable. Lamictal really helped to smooth that out. FWIW I take prozac AND lamictal.

It works for me.
