alright, I am so fed up! Yes, I have an eating disorder issue and I am in the process of getting help for it, but How come I am putting weight on so quickly. I dont want to gain weight. I am sure my eating is messed up and I know what I have to watch but I am not sure inf Risperadol or Prozac is putting the weight on or if it is the eating? I try to workout at least 5 days a week sometimes 4 no less than 4 (lifting weights) and I am still gaining weigh. I am about to stop taking the Prozac for a few days. I am on 20mg prozac and .5mg of Risperadol? Help!!!!!!!!!!

if concerned, i would talk to your p-doc about the weight gain. They can help evaluate either other med possibilities or even investigating if the meds are an issue.

When you first start taking risperadol, it can make you put on some weight but usually settles down after a while. The benefits of taking it outway the problem of weight gain. And you may not have to take risperadol for too long anyway.
I don't think Prozac makes you gain weight. ps. Welcome to Psych Central. ![]()

I have never been on risperadol, but I have, in the past, been on prozac(I can't remember the dosage) and didn't experience weight gain.
Perhaps, it's the risperadol? Check with your doc. Also, have you had a thyroid function screening(lab bloodwork) lately? It might be something you may want to look into, while going through this. I know how frustrating this is, from my own experience. I wish you lots of luck, in getting to the bottom of this. Just my 2 cents. DE

Either drug can cause weight gain, but Prozac generally doesn't cause weight gain until about four to six months into taking it.
That's the bad news, you could talk to your doctor about trying Topomax with them, that might help minimize the weight gain. And skipping a few days of Prozac won't do a thing for you. It can take a while to get your body back to pre-SSRI metabolism. For what it's worth, Zoloft or Wellbutrin might be easier on teh weight gain. Then again, if Prozac is working for you, much better to work with your pdoc to mitigate the weight gain. Which, in my opinion, is more probably the Risperdal anyway.

I was on Risperadol and gained a substantial amount of weight. I was on many different anti depressants at the same time including Wellbutrin.
My medicines went through many changes, but my weight was now up and I believe it was due to risperadol and tofrinal(spelling sorry). Anyways, I'm now on Wellbutrin and none of those other meds and don't have weight gain issues. My point of saying I was on Wellbutrin and Risperadol at the same time is ...is that it didn't counteract the weight issue. It seems when certain meds that are known to cause weight gain ... the other meds that "may" be helpful to lose weight ...aren't usually strong enough to win that battle. Risperadol is one of those meds unfortunately. Only thing is I would definately discuss this with your doctor first before you mess around with meds. Discuss that this is really making you uncomfortable etc.

I had a problem with prozac & wellbutrin.....I lost so much weight I ended up in an eating disorders treatment center & was in & out of the hospital for over a year with having central line TPN feeding. The prozac started my not eating....I hated the flavor of food & just felt sick everytime I tried to eat so I just wouldn't.....I got down to 83 lbs before anyone noticed (even ny pdoc). At that point I was dangerously low weight even at 5'2". Just this last year, I was so stressed with the trauma I went through when my Mother was dying of cancer & the ID theft I was trying to deal with. I was put into the hospital to be treated for anorexia again with the PICC line which got infected just 2 hours before my Mother died. The stress I was under was so bad I just couldn't get any food down......I wasn't on any antidepressant this time....it was just stress. I think different meds act differently with different people because I know it was prozac that caused the first anorexia problem. I know that many people have anorexia problems with prozac, so not quite sure why you are having the opposite problem....but like I said, everybody has different reactions.
Hope you find out your answer soon, Debbie

Dear fitgal37,
You should have a leaflet that comes with your tablets that tells you what the side-effects are. I don't know anything about prozac. I have had resperadol in the past and I remember the leaflet saying- Some people may put on weight while taking this, and to eat sparingly. Now, you are only taking a very small dose- .5mg daily. I really don't think you need to be worrying because you will not balloon on that amount. I suggest that you talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of taking your meds. Hope this info helps.

I wasn't on risperadol long enough to really know what it would do but my pdoc was wanting me to go on it when I was dealing with my anorexia from the stress I was going through with my Mothers death & the ID theft I caught the home care RN doing at the beginning of 2005. Just the stress got me down to 93 lbs & I couldn't & wouldn't take any of the antidepressants because when I tried even the smallest amount my migraines came back.....so I refused to take any of those meds. I am now stable at a reasonable low weight while taking seroquel so that I can sleep without getting the horrible nightmares & flashbacks in my twain state between sleep & awake. I just can't take any other antidepressants without getting migraines......they just tried Cymbalta & the migraines started to show up again so out they went. I have my migraines stable with a very high dose of fentynal (a strong narcotic)
At the time I got down to 83 lbs I had been only on prozac & then on only wellbutrin....& both of them dropped my weight that bad. They put me into an eating disorders treatment center but I really didn't want to gain the weight besides the fact I was having suicidal issues at the time too & figured that anorexia wouldn't be looked at as suicide. The time I went down to 83 lbs was about 9 years ago & know it was both of those meds that caused the weight loss. For a year after that I was in & out of the medical hospital everytime I passed out. Then they had a central line put in with TPN feeding for about a week until I was stable enough to go home for about a month until the next time I passed out. It is good to be thin, but I can tell you that being treated for being way to thin is horrible. The central line is done by an anatheisologist (?). They use a local & then get into a vein that goes close to your heart. Then they hook up the TPN which is a combination of nutriants that messes with your sugar level so they have to monitor you as if you were a diabetic constantly. I can definitely tell you that it is best to find a weight that you are comfortable with & try to stay with it....finding the right med that works for you without causing the other problems. I would definitely say that it is the risperadol that is causing the weight gain even though it is a small dose....it is amazing what effecft even small doses can have on you. I know while I was trying to deal with my PTSD in a partial program, my pdoc tried to have me take 1/2 of a capsul of Cymbalta (just try getting 1/2 of a capsul, but it knocked me out for 48 hours......I slept throuth all the groups.....so I wasn't gettiing anything out of the program....but without something I couldn't cope with all the emotions that were coming out, so I decided that I was better off without the program. It is a known fact that prozac causes weight loss...that is one of it's main side effects....but be careful not to get too thin......I have been there 2 times & have been treated in the medical hospital so many times I have lost count.....but it isn't worth being that thin either. Hope you can find the right combination of meds that really help you without the side effects that you can't tolerate either....& I know that gaining weight is a real issue for me too but passing out all the time isn't good either. Take care, Debbie

Buspar is supposed to be weight neutral, for what it's worth. I've never heard anyone say he/she gained from it.
PROZAC, though, is known to cause weight gain. Yes, Risperdal is also known to cause weight gain, but don't overlook the Prozac. You didn't mention your dose, nor how long you've been on it, but all the SSRIs tend to cause weight gain, because of their effect on the serotonin receptors in the gut that control both appetite and motility. It's great that you're getting treatment for your ED, and I think this is a concern to take up wiht your doctor. One option that helps a lot of people is taking Topomax along with the drug that's causing weight gain. The rule with Topomax, to avoid side effects, is to start VERY low, and to go VERY slowly in titrating up. Good luck.

Hang in there with the meds if you can. They will make you feel better. Remember that you will not have to take meds forever. Take care.
