I've spoken to a lot of bulimics who've take Topomax, and all have said it helped significantly to reduce the urge to purge. They all said it helped, some significantly.

Sorry it's only second hand, but I hope it offers some hope for you. I have, though, also heard that you have to start very low, and increase very slowly. That will minimize the side effects, and the side effects have been bad for some of them. Only a couple stopped over them, but it's something else to keep in mind. (Although my former pdoc said taking bicarb with it helps with most of them.)

I am a recovering bulimic, and topamax made a huge difference for me....but not for as long as I'd hoped for. I finally had relative control over my urge to purge, but the side effects were AWEFUL. Doctors refer to it as the dummy drug, as it makes you slow and incompetent at ANY sort of higher thinking tasks.

My friend's taking it for migranes, and after two weeks started losing concentration. We both had the experience of having a two-three second recall period. I couldn't even remember what a friend had said during a SHORT fight that upset me...which was very frustrating when I tried to talk to others about it.

Provigil's a good functional drug that's being introduced as an option for treating bulimia. It's a stimulant for shift worker sleep disorder, and it really helped me regain a normal appetite. It too wore down after a month (and I wasn't getting the ADHD help that it's also used for) so I've been on Adderall since October, which is amazing. I'd recommend Provigil, unless you have ADHD, since Adderall's not prescribed unless you also have ADHD.
