Sorry they weren't more careful then. Same with SSRI's when they were new. Sertraline ruined my life.... for me that is the horror med.

I don't know about Prozac, but maybe people needed to start it slower? They started me on 60 mg which is the max dosage. That wasn't fun.
I also tolerated Zoloft the first two years, then it started making me depressed. I do think people can have different tolerance between different SSRI's. The one I'm on now, Luvox, hasn't caused me a single side effect (part from caffeine intolerance), while other SSRIs always caused me side effects at the start like nausea and insomnia. Nothing like that with this. I guess it just goes with my body chemistry. One of the reasons that Luvox is rarely mentioned as one of the best tolerated antidepressants, is that it actually is not listed as an antidepressant in several countries, just an anxiety med. Nothing to do with the topic really, just a note. |

I've never had a drug's side-effects go away, no matter how much "willpower" I had to see them through. It doesn't even work the way you claim it does for everybody.

No, it's not seen as a weak med. The real reason it was getting impopular was that it was connected to the Columbine massacre, and the brand name producer being scared and stopped making it.

I have this odd ability to stop pretty much any med without problems. (It's a bit freakish actually.) It isn't a sign the meds are weak; different people just respond so differently to medications.

yup. Seems like telling person with peanut allergy how nuts are healthy for you. Some folks react badly to chemicals. Period. No need to act like you have invested all your money in Pharma stocks and that by one person not taking meds you lose all of it... as some act. If one had bad reaction to multiple meds... maybe it's better to try something else. There ARE alternatives.

I understand this! After I found out that an SSRI wasn't an option (made me worse...) it has been an uphill battle to find something that will help! Right now I'm trying buspar- but we think I may have a type of allergy to it. So we will see. I hope we both find OUR medicine soon!

All meds as patient are different. Some side effects like sleepiness wil subside and some can be controlled. Don't give up hope! Stopping meds abruptly can cause their own set of probs too. Consult your health care provider!

Mood foods. Hard core yoga practice. Mindfulnes. Going to India. Sorting your past and present. Are you trying to tell those who are allergic to meds that they are doomed?

Those of us who can't take meds aren't doomed......I am one of those people who had the worse side effects....even when I was in the hospital & my pdoc would give me the tinest dose possible.....I would still end up with the worse side effects....one even made my joints so stiff I couldn't walk or even sit up in the hospital bed......he didn't get it at first.....but then ended up having to give me a shot to counteract the bad side effect. To start with back in the mid 90's, they were the old AD's.....but then my last pdoc decided to try the lamictal (sp) & I ended up breaking out in a bad rash......he gave up permanently at that point. For awhile after going through a horrible trauma & I couldn't sleep, he gave me seroquel....it knocked me out....but that's what I needed it was the only way I could sleep without the nightmares.....so I went with it for awhile. Many of the side effects were the migraines.....then I ended up with a non-stop migraine which I am still on pain medication for. Worst side effect was the parkinson's like reaction I had....double med problem at the time....both compozine (for the migraine nausea & thorizine). Urgent care didn't catch both meds as the cause, so ended up going back to my neurologist when the condition didn't go away....he caught the 2nd med as a cause, but it took another month for it to get out of my system so I could even feed myself again let alone walk without assistance.
NOW, I take the Omega 3 EPA at 1600mg/day (along with the DHA that's part of the fish oil I take).....for depression & it helps with my anxiety but not as much. I make sure I eat healthy foods when I eat....stress is one thing that causes me to deal with anorexia when it hits long term situations. My pain specialist has given me some meds to help with sleep even now, I have problems sleeping at times unless I am completely exhausted.....yesterday I went to sleep at 3pm & didn't wake up until the next morning at 7am.....first good night sleep in awhile for the stress I'm going through lately. What helped me more than anything is the DBT group I am in....learning the skills to deal with distress & emotions & how to deal with interpersonal effectiveness along with the wise mind (mindfulness) which is the method to learn how do solve the problems that are causing the distress & emotional dysregulation.......it helps more than anything else....because meds only end up masking the problems. Yes, at times it's needed so that you can start to think, but for me, there wasn't a med that helped me get to that point.....so I just had to deal with it the best I can & learning the skills & the methods of thinking through problems.....was the best possible solution for me. I am not completely better & I still get flash backs from the trauma I went through but I am no longer constantly suicidal like I was back in the late 90's (trauma happened in 2004 & wasn't related to the previous anxiety & depression).....I also left my husband 5 years ago & was surprised to find out just how much the bad marriage was a cause to that depression even though at the time I thought it was just loosing my career that did it.
