I did it! I was assertive, which wasn't hard because my pdoc is very nice. At least he was today! He said to take a break and to call him if I want to try something else. He said I apparently don't react to seritonin, and said there are 2 other neurotransmitters. I'm not sure what he said they are, but he said Wellbutrin is somthing I could try, and the other one I never heard of.

He said I cold just stop the zoloft without tapering. I questioned that, so if I want to do it gradually, I can but he doesn't think I'll get brain zaps or anything by stopping it all at once. Does anyone have experiencing going off 50 mg. of zoloft? I was only on that dose for 2 weeks, but for about 2 months went from 25 mg. gradually up to the 50. Thanks!

I may just NOT try anything else. I don't like the way the zoloft made me feel.

I stopped cold turkey from 50mg, and I was miserable and irritable for a week or two. I was on for longer than two weeks, though. You may be fine.

I'm glad you were assertive!

If it wasn't the med for you, better stop. But I don't agree with the doc. There is no one serotonin med. All the SSRI's are not the same. Actually some are very different from each other and it's not especially smart to diss a class of med for all the future. The theory makes sense... but real life is different. You might do well on a different class med, but still... if all SSRIs were the same there would be one single med called SSRI.

I stopped cold turkey from 50 Mg. I was fine. I made a concentrated effort not to worry about brain zaps and overmonitor anything that could be a 'withdrawal' symptom.

I took 25 mg for 2 days, then half of that for 2 days, so my last pill was Friday morning. Today is Sunday, and I still feel jittery. Also cold, though that could be due to the damp weather. Will this jitteriness go away? I KNOW I was not jittery before going on the zoloft! My experiment with meds has not been a good one at all. I was only on zoloft for about 2 months, and only on 50 mg for 2 weeks. I sure hope none of these effects is permanent.

jimi: I agree with you, but I think it's because I didn't feel any better, so the pdoc felt I didn't need serotonin? I don't know. He "pushed" meds on me, like valium and ambien, but on the other hand, also suggested GABA instead, which I may look into. I don't know if I'd go back to him or not. I have no idea how to judge a pdoc. To his credit, he's the one who suggested taking a break. He didn't say "try this now".

I'm glad meds work for others, though!

if you may take nothing you carnt be that ill. You would walk on broken glass bare foot if trully deppresed to find a cure. 25mg of zoloft in not even theraputic you should have moved to 50 mg after a week and maybe to 100mg within a month , then a 10 week trial. If nothing move to a better med like lexapro.

I had been taking Zoloft since the summer of 09. I was up 200mg and it just wasn't working anymore. Pdoc just switch me over to Prestiq 50mg be cause it is liver friendly, as I also have liver disease. was told to only take 100mg the first day, day after that 50mg then start the Prestiq. This was 2/17 The brain zaps, that I call brain zingers just quit the frist of this week I think the last one was 3/5 or 6 just glad there over. They didn't hurt or anything, but when they happen right on top of each other it is anoying. They only last a split second but in that split my eyes would go nuts. One eye seeing one thing and the other something else and not putting the two pictures together in my mind. I would hear a loud zing or three in my head and my vision goes nuts, thank God that only last for a millisecond. At 50mg I would not even worry about it, you may get some slight zaps for a couple of days, 4 at most, but that would probably be about it

I've been taking Zoloft since august of 2009 taking 100 mg a day. After I started therapy with my current t a year and a half ago, I decided I wanted to reduce the zoloft with the intention of getting off it at some point. pdoc reduced it to 75 mg per day, then about 4 months into that I went down to 50mg on my own. Last time I saw him he said that 50 mg was likely not doing anything for me and I probably do not need it at all anymore. Sunday of this week I broke my last few pills of current bottle in half and plan to take 25mg per day til they're gone then quit from there. I see pdoc again in May so we'll see how it goes. Brain zaps - is that like an electrical sort of feeling going across your forehead? I got those for awhile when I went down to 50mg.

I don't know the answers, Artemis. I was only on 50 mg. for 2 weeks. I feel so much better now that I'm off of it. I know I shouldn't make a decision based on one med, but I decided meds aren't for me.

You're right. I'm not that ill. It was supposed to be for OCD but I don't have the normal kind of OCD anyway. I don't want any meds at all.

Well in my case my body hates all SSRIs...so if you decide to try something else, I would maybe try a different class and see how that works. I am a big fan of no meds at all though, if you are going for that!
And zoloft made me feel horrible!
Thanks for this!

I went off 100mg without any problem. Had only been on it a few weeks though. Maybe try a different class of anti-depressant? Just because one med doesn't work doesn't mean others won't either.
