It's not that important. I'm just wondering if I'll die or not.. because so far its doing nothing to damage my health..

I simply don't drink alcohol because of prescription meds and the risks in combination with alcohol. It is not safe and I would not recommend it to anybody.

What time of day do you take the clonazepam? If you take it throughout the day/evening you should not drink at all. If you take it only at night you 'might' be able to have a couple of drinks early in the day but early enough that the alcohol is out of your system before you take the clonazepam. But four beers.... no way, that is too much. You don't need to get drunk while on benzos. Benzos by themselves are very safe but combined with alcohol they can be deadly.
I got the okay from my pdoc before I drank any alcohol on my meds. You should also discuss this with your pdoc. If you are an alcoholic and cannot control your drinking you need to let your pdoc know and not take any benzos at all. I am not judging you, just telling your for your safety.

Maybe (I am not judging you at all) you should ask about getting your med upped a little so you feel more relaxed so you wont feel the need to drink? Do you drink to relax or do you drink because you enjoy kicking back and the taste? I guess thats the important question. But yes I take that medication too with many more and hear it nonstop that never should you drink on it....like one time isnt enough of telling someone. Good luck on your journey

When I spoke with my pdoc about benzos and alcohol, he told me that if you've taken a benzo within about 3 hours then you can expect the effect of the alcohol to be doubled. But, it varies person to person, just as the effects of benzos alone or alcohol alone vary by person.
I'd suggest talking with your pdoc about what a safe amount of alcohol is when taking benzos. My pdoc was very open to the discussion and appreciated me asking about it. Personally, I'm very sensitive to alcohol, and dislike feeling buzzed, so I made the choice not to drink alcohol at all while on meds.

I take .5mg in the morning and .5mg at night. im not sure if i can explain this properly but i know that taking a benzo with a drink at the same time is wrong but my body should have built some sort of tolerance to the clonazepam by now because i still feel i bit anxious at times of the day so its ok to drink some in the evening before i take my night pill?

Well, here I am that has abused benzo's and thrown in alcohol too.
I've taken 7x0.5mg benzo's in one go when I was only prescribed 0.5mg prn. I slept like a bomb. I can't say it affected me much, except that I became very chilled and at the same time very emotional. No, this was not the wisest thing I have ever done. I am now not meant to take benzo's due to the possibility of me abusing them, but I do drink on my remaining psych meds. My T does get angry with me occasionally. I think what we don't realize are the underlying issues. I had only taken 1 Ativan the one morning, and my other BP meds, and that day I ended up smashing my car and not remembering the day at all. Psych meds and alcohol also make things very difficult for your liver, and it takes a lot of strain.

I agree that its best to talk to your doctor about that. I don't drink at all, because I'm a recovering alcoholic and have to stay away from it altogether anyway--so it's not even really something I think about. Personally, tho, I would be afraid to risk it.

Just talk to your dr...imo (not to be taken as much), I don't think you are taking that much klonopin, so if you time it right, you might be ok. But your dr. should know you are drinking anyway as klonopin does stay in your system a long time and you want to be safe. A pharmacist might be able to talk to you as well, but still tell your dr for sure.
Glad .5 twice a day works fairly well for you. I take 4 mg at night to keep my bad dreams away, but it helps none with my anxiety during the day...and I started out at 4 mg, no tolerance to build up, nothing less worked. ![]() ![]() |

My p-doc friend does not recommend using alcohol in combination with benzos and for this reason tries to not prescribe benzos unless it is a last resort measure, but people are different, the reactions are different, the doctors have different opinions, etc., so I just wanted to remind you to EAT if you drink. Eating a complete meal slows down the absorption of alcohol by the body three-fold - definitely this is the safer route if you choose to have your beer. Another safety measure is to drink a full glass of a non-alcoholic beverage per each serving of alcohol.

Hi:
You've received a lot of good advice here. I also take klonopin(up to 1.75 mg dily) and drink occasionally. I discussed this with the doc that prescribed it and in my particular situation, he did not have a problem with it. When I do drink, I usually skip a dose and don't drive. I agree with others that you need to talk to your precribing doc about this. The irony is that when I drink, I feel much better. I realize that this could be a dangerous road to self medication, so I restrict my drinking to primarily weekends. I often wish a med could be developed that had the same effects as drinking. I've brought this up to my doc and therapist, and they agree, but know of no med of this sort. Please talk to your doc and hope you feel better. |

My PDocs always told me to never mix alcohol with my meds. I have occasionally, but in moderation. If I know I might drink a glass of wine one evening, I'll skip the klonipin. But I'm very sensitive to any substances. Not everyone responds the same way. I'd listen to a previous poster and make sure to have a good meal before drinking anyway.

I'd say not mixing the two is best, but that is just based on my experience with drinking on it. It didn't work out so well, mixing the two is not totally to blame but it certainly did not help the situation. It probably depends on how it effects you personally though.

You're 16 right. That's still under the legal drinking age in Canada. Not to be all your mom about it but your brain is still developing and you have psychosis....you're not supposed to mix with the antipsychotics either. Why not wait a few years?

Don't worry I am. I just like to have a few every now and then during the day or at work or something. I'm not going out and getting hammered like most of my friends do so it's ok i guess.

I don't think the timing is an issue since unlike other benzos, clonazepam has a very long half life so it stays active in your system for a very long time, like days. So whether or not you take it in the morning or at night, it still will be present and mix with the alcohol.
I myself take clonazepam twice a day and have for a very long time, so much so that I'm pretty tolerant by now. I drink when I want to, sometimes too much, but not to the point of serious intoxication. You're not supposed to mix the two, that is true, but people are people and if they want to drink, they are going to. As long as you're not overdoing it or driving or anything else, I think it is an individual decision about how much risk you want to take with your body in terms of wear and tear not serious danger like an OD. It would take a lot more of the drug mixed with a lot of alcohol to cause death. Not a good idea to test that out though. A couple of beers and 1 mg of Klonopin is no way near a fatal combination. That's just false. Not condoning the mixing, just saying no one can tell you what to do with your body. |
